‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Cast Gets Emotional Over a Cancellation That Few Saw Coming

Few procedurals can claim the kind of staying power ‘Criminal Minds’ has. The series ran for 15 seasons on CBS before being revived as ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ on Paramount+. Along the way, it survived cast shake-ups, a network ending and a fan base that simply refused to let the Behavioral Analysis Unit go.

The revival leaned into that loyalty. Paramount+ brought the show back with Season 16 premiering in November 2022, with shorter 10-episode seasons built on longer story arcs. Much of the main cast returned, except for Matthew Gray Gubler as Spencer Reid.

That is why the latest news has landed so hard. Variety reports that the show’s stars, including A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster and Kirsten Vangsness, are now looking back on the franchise’s 20-season run after learning it is ending. The outlet’s headline for the story even includes the phrase ‘Rest in Peace,’ which gives a sense of the mood.

The cancellation itself is a significant one. The upcoming 20th season will be the fifth for the Paramount+ revival and the last for the franchise, marking the first cancellation under the Paramount/Skydance merger. Deadline reported that the show was canceled on October 30, noting that the decision not to move forward was a recent development.

The timing is what makes the news sting. Paramount+ renewed the series for a fifth season ahead of its fourth season premiere, and Season 19 arrived on May 28, 2026. That means the show went from a fresh renewal to a farewell in a matter of months.

There is also a behind-the-scenes wrinkle. One report says the cast filmed the final season without knowing it would be their last, because those episodes had already wrapped when the decision was made. Unlike the original CBS finale, which gave the team a chance to say goodbye on purpose, this ending arrived after the cameras stopped rolling.

Fans will still get one more case file. According to Variety, the final season is set to premiere in 2027, though no date has been announced, and first-look photos were shared alongside the news. The same report notes that Deadline describes the run as over ‘for now,’ a hedge this franchise has already earned once.

The cast reactions have been a mix of gratitude and heartbreak. Vangsness reacted in an Instagram video, acknowledging that the show was being canceled. Variety’s post teases an even more playful comparison from one of the stars, who opens with a reference to the chocolate scene in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’

Longtime viewers know this ensemble has been through a lot together. The current cast includes Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler and newcomer RJ Hatanaka, as well as Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster. That is a lot of history to wrap up in a single final run.

‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Is Ending as Paramount+ Closes the Book on the Long-Running BAU Drama

Cook and Brewster, in particular, have a unique connection to the idea of the show surviving the odds. CBS fired both actors after Season 5 and cited creative reasons, but the backlash was so strong that the show brought them back in 2011 for Season 7. If any group knows that a goodbye in this franchise is not always permanent, it is them.

For now, the focus is on sending the BAU off properly. All 19 seasons of ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘Evolution’ are streaming on Paramount+ ahead of the premiere, giving fans plenty of time to revisit the team before the final bow. Whether the franchise finds another way back is anyone’s guess, but the cast’s reactions suggest they are savoring this chapter while it lasts.
