The ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Cast Debates the Best Skill for Surviving the Hunger Games
The countdown to ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is nearly over. Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novel opens in theaters on November 20, taking fans back to Panem 24 years before the events of ‘The Hunger Games’.
The story follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, who is selected for the 50th Hunger Games. Because it’s a Quarter Quell, every district must send twice the usual number of tributes to the Capitol, making the competition even deadlier.
As the press tour heats up, the film’s young stars have been sharing some of their more playful sides. In a clip shared by DiscussingFilm, the cast tried to figure out which skill would be most useful for surviving the Hunger Games.
The video shows 5 cast members seated together on a mustard-yellow sofa, framed by golden arched panels and colorful floral arrangements. As they bounce ideas around, the conversation turns to how each of them might handle the arena.
One of the standout answers paid tribute to the original films. A cast member joked that they would learn how to paint themselves into a perfectly camouflaged rock, just like Peeta did, a nod to the character’s famous hiding skills from the first movie.

The joke landed with fans who remember Peeta Mellark’s artistic talent as one of his most surprising survival tools. The video’s captions also show the group teasing Ben Wang, who plays District 12 tribute Wyatt Callow, about what he might do in the arena. The clip quickly gained traction online. It gave fans a fun break from the intense themes of the franchise while showing the chemistry among the young cast.

Zada leads the cast as Haymitch, with Mckenna Grace as fellow District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner. Wang plays Wyatt Callow, an oddsmaker, while Molly McCann plays Louella McCoy.
Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend. The film also features Jesse Plemons as a young Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow.
Glenn Close, Billy Porter, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Lili Taylor round out the ensemble. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are also reportedly expected to return as Katniss and Peeta, though that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ is one of the biggest releases of the season. The film runs 158 minutes, with a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, and has a reported budget of $170 million to $200 million.
It’s also expected to play in IMAX. TheWrap reported that Regal and Cinemark are likely to dedicate their IMAX screens to the film’s 2nd week instead of Netflix’s ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ during the Thanksgiving window.

The film’s soundtrack album is set for release on November 13, a week before the movie arrives in theaters. With release day just weeks away, excitement continues to build for Haymitch’s story.
Fans of the book already know how brutal his Games become, making moments like this lighthearted cast video an especially welcome contrast. Whether or not any of the stars could actually survive the arena, they clearly had fun imagining it.
