Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is gathering one of the biggest ensembles the studio has ever assembled. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who also made ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, the film brings the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans and the X-Men together against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

As the release approaches, merchandise and promotional material keep offering fans better looks at the heroes. Earlier promo art showed Cyclops, Gambit and Beast in comic-inspired costumes, and Marvel’s teasers have hinted at an army of Sentinels.

Now even more official imagery has surfaced. Avengers Updates shared new promotional art of 13 characters, crediting the images to @hexfacilitycom, which also supplied the earlier life-size cutouts of Cyclops, Gambit and Beast.

The images, which appear to be cardboard standees, are split into 3 groups. One set shows Mystique, Nightcrawler and Gambit, another features Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops and Beast, and the third spotlights Captain America, Thor, Shang-Chi and Ant-Man.

Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique stands with her arms crossed in a white outfit with blue accents, her signature blue skin and red hair intact. Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler crouches in a black leather coat with his tail curled behind him, a look fans haven’t seen on screen since ‘X2’.

Patrick Stewart’s Professor X sits in his wheelchair wearing a dark jacket with an X patch on the chest. Ian McKellen’s Magneto is in a crimson suit, flowing cape, and his classic helmet. The art arrives at an emotional moment for fans. Stewart died on October 28 at the age of 86, and McKellen has noted that his longtime friend’s final performance is in this film.

The new X-Men designs have already drawn praise from fans. Comic Basics noted that James Marsden’s Cyclops trades the black leather of the Fox films for a blue suit with yellow trim and a visor, which may draw on the animated series, ‘X-Men ’97’ or Jim Lee’s 1990s design.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit wears a long, textured coat and carries a staff and a glowing card. The character first appeared in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, and Tatum has said ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is more dramatic than that comedy.

Kelsey Grammer is back as Beast after a brief post-credits appearance in ‘The Marvels’. This time he has a proper role in the main ensemble. On the Avengers side, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America stands ready with his red, white, and blue shield. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor leaps into action in dark armor, lightning crackling around his axe.

Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man round out that group. Other cast members include Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Florence Pugh’s Yelena, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards.

Downey Jr.’s Doom leads a threat to the multiverse, and his identity and background are still being kept under wraps. A special look shown at D23 showed Doom throwing Thor around and commanding an army of Sentinels, which raises the stakes for the mutants.

Another teaser showed Cyclops in the ruins of the X-Mansion tearing off his visor and firing an optic blast. It also showed Xavier and Magneto reunited. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ follows next year, and a separate ‘X-Men’ reboot with a new cast is planned for 2028.
