Where Russell Shaw Stands in ‘Tracker’ and What It Means for Jensen Ackles’ Role
Few recurring characters in ‘Tracker’ generate as much anticipation as Russell Shaw. Jensen Ackles first appeared as Colter’s brother in the first season, and he has since balanced the part with his work as Soldier Boy in the fifth and final season of ‘The Boys’. That balancing act has shaped how often viewers get to see him.
Following Jensen Ackles’ Russell Shaw in ‘Tracker’ has meant tracking schedules as much as storylines. A recent episode answered the biggest question about the character’s current status, and the details say a lot about where the CBS drama is heading.
The Season 3 Finale and the Jensen Ackles ‘Tracker’ Return
CBS confirmed that Ackles would reprise Russell in the third season finale, which aired on May 24. That appearance followed two episodes at the start of the season, so Ackles effectively bookended the year. The pattern showed how the production fits him in around his other work.
In the finale itself, McIntyre, the head of Chrono Stasis played by Glenn Morshower, blackmailed Russell into taking a job. If Russell refused, McIntyre would show Colter a file revealing what their father did to him as a child. It was a heavy turn for a character who had spent much of his screen time helping his brother chase answers.
Russell’s exit also had a practical side. His departure at the end of the season eased scheduling pressure, since Ackles was committed to ‘The Boys’ and ‘Vought Rising’ in Toronto. TVLine was first to report that Ackles would come back in the fifth episode of the fourth season, and CBS later set that episode for the first Sunday in November.
What Justin Hartley Revealed About Russell Shaw in Season 4
Justin Hartley made the return official during a panel at Televerse in August, saying Ackles would join filming the following week. Ackles later posted from set and said it felt good to be back after a long summer break with his family.
Hartley also pointed to an unusual dynamic. Viewers know something Colter does not, because they saw the blackmail play out in the finale, and Hartley called it the first time the audience has been ahead of his character. That sets up tension for any scene the brothers share.
On the case itself, Hartley described a dire situation involving a friend of Russell’s who is perfectly happy not to be found. He added that “It reunites the brothers, and they have a united front.”
The longer view matters too. Showrunner Elwood Reid has said he hopes to bring Ackles back for a larger block of episodes dealing with the fallout from Russell’s secret deal. Ackles told a convention audience over the summer that he was waiting for the phone call once filming began.
The Shaw Brothers Reunion in “Need to Know”
The episode, titled “Need to Know,” aired on a Sunday evening in November. Football ran late, so it started closer to 10 p.m. Eastern. The story centers on the kidnapping of a military contractor’s wife and daughter.
According to one recap, Russell phoned Colter after weeks of silence and asked for help on a case that could involve no police. The setting was Atlanta, and the kidnapper wanted something from the contractor’s files. The father had 48 hours to retract an After Action Report or his family would be killed.
The guest cast added a familiar face. Jeff Pierre of ‘Walker’ appeared as Grant Valko, the contractor at the center of the case. The brothers worked the case together, with Colter tracking leads and Russell throwing punches, before rescuing the mother and daughter from an outbuilding on a ranch.
The episode closed on a lighter note. Reenie called to say she was handling the legal side, then learned a man was in Russell’s trunk, and reminded Colter to pick a date for dinner. It was a reminder of how the series balances procedural stakes with the Shaw family dynamic.
Where Russell Shaw Could Go Next in ‘Tracker’ Season 4
Russell has long been a draw for the audience. His first appearance made him a fan favorite, and his screen time was limited for a while. This reunion also arrived relatively early in the run.
The unresolved material is where the character matters most. McIntyre’s file and Russell’s secret deal remain the clearest threads from the finale, and Reid’s stated hope for a bigger block of episodes suggests the writers are not finished with them. A brother who hides things to protect Colter makes for a very different dynamic than one who simply shows up to help.
Reid has also been playful about the character’s future. When asked about Ackles’ presence on the show, he cheekily offered a one word hint at a spin off. Whether Colter eventually learns what Russell agreed to do, and whether the brothers can stay united when he does, is the question worth asking in the comments, so how do you think Colter will react if McIntyre’s file ever reaches him?
