Where Scola’s Future on ‘FBI’ Stands as Nina’s San Diego Job Offer Looms

The question of Scola’s future on ‘FBI’ has returned in the ninth season, and this time the show itself is supplying the material. Nothing in the most recent episode establishes an exit for John Boyd’s character, but the story now in motion gives viewers every reason to watch Stuart Scola closely.

The CBS drama premiered its ninth season on October 5, and the season is set to run for 22 episodes. That leaves plenty of room for a personal storyline to play out, and the early chapters suggest a decision is coming for Scola and his wife.

Is Scola Leaving ‘FBI’ After the Season 9 Setup

Speculation about an exit is not new. Fans worried back in 2023 after a crossover scare, though there was no confirmation that Scola or Boyd was leaving. The concern keeps returning because the character’s home life has been changing around him for several seasons.

Recent coverage has been careful on this point. Scola supporting Nina’s offer is not confirmation that he is leaving the series, and her return on November 16 should show what the couple decides. A fair reading is that the writers are building a family dilemma, not announcing a departure.

Boyd’s standing on the show points the same way. A Paramount biography from July describes him as starring as Scola in the ninth season, and the series cast listing carries the character from the second season to the present. None of that settles what comes next, but it frames the story as one still being told.

Nina’s San Diego Job Offer and Scola’s Dilemma

In “Atonement,” which aired on November 2, the team learns that Nina has been offered her own task force, complete with her own hires and her own budget. Jubal calls it a big step up, and Maggie argues that Nina has to accept. Scola, by contrast, keeps his feelings close at first.

The reason comes out in conversation with his partner. The job is in San Diego, which would mean Nina moving to California, and Scola admits he asked her not to take it. He told Eva Ramos he worried their family might not survive uprooting everything, even while acknowledging how hard Nina has worked for this.

The episode then turns. After the case wraps, Scola leaves Nina a voicemail saying she should take the job and that they will figure it out. What remains open is whether he will be going with her, and that is precisely the point on which the whole storyline rests.

Showrunner Mike Weiss previewed the arc ahead of the season. In an interview with Give Me My Remote, Weiss said the writers would complicate Scola’s life about five episodes in, when Nina lands a dream job running her own Fugitive Task Force, one that comes with some big asterisks.

Shantel VanSanten’s Return in ‘Posterity’

The next chapter arrives soon. Shantel VanSanten is returning as Nina Chase for one night only in a Season 9 episode, and “Posterity” airs on Monday, November 16, at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific, with a script by Jake Tinker and direction by Milena Govich.

The official synopsis has the team discovering, after the murder of an online influencer, that one of their cameras captured video of a criminal on the Most Wanted list. The team works alongside Nina to intercept him before he disappears. Promotional images show the pair in an art museum with guns drawn and questioning someone in a workshop.

The couple’s history gives the appearance extra weight. VanSanten left as a series regular in the sixth episode of Season 5, titled “Double Bind,” and came back in the Season 8 episode “Confetti” on February 23. In that hour she and Scola got engaged and held a low key wedding at City Hall with their son Dougie and their loved ones.

There is also a practical storytelling reason for her return. Reporting on the interview notes that Weiss called bringing her back the easiest route because of her marriage to Scola. That makes the guest spot feel less like a cameo and more like the place where the show can address the choice it has set up.

John Boyd’s Long History as Stuart Scola

Boyd is one of the longer serving members of the ensemble. He joined ‘FBI’ at the start of its second season, after earlier work as a series regular on ‘Bones’ and a role on ’24’. That track record helps explain why Scola has become such a steady presence in the field office.

The character’s background has always set him apart from the rest of the team. Scola is described as an Ivy League educated Wall Streeter turned FBI agent. He is now partnered with Eva Ramos, who became his partner after Dani Rhodes’s death, and the pairing gave the latest episode its emotional center.

Boyd also has interests beyond the show. He released his first single, “Feather and Stone,” in 2025, followed by an EP with five tracks. Nothing in that biography points to a departure, and it reads as a snapshot of an actor with a busy creative life alongside a long running network role.

For now the evidence supports patience over alarm. If Nina accepts the San Diego task force, should Scola follow her west or stay with Eva and the New York team, and does ‘Posterity’ feel like the right place for ‘FBI’ to settle it?
