Timothée Chalamet Says ‘Dune: Part Three’ Is Its Own Thing and Villeneuve Didn’t Lower the Bar
Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ saga is heading into its final chapter, and its star is making it clear that the last film won’t simply repeat what came before. ‘Dune: Part Three’ adapts Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and opens in theaters on December 18, closing out the trilogy that made Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides one of modern sci-fi’s defining characters.
The first 2 films followed Paul’s rise from exiled heir to Emperor. ‘Dune: Part Two’ ended with him taking the throne, while Zendaya’s Chani walked away after he asked for Princess Irulan’s hand.
Now Chalamet is teasing just how different the third film feels. In a new interview with The New York Times, he said the quality bar didn’t drop at all; Villeneuve simply moved it somewhere new.
Chalamet stressed that the new movie is its own thing. That framing suggests the trilogy’s finale is less a direct continuation of the earlier films’ epic war story and more a distinct experience.
It’s not the first time Chalamet has described the sequel this way. “Dune: Part Three” has “its own energy,” he told The National at the film’s trailer launch in Abu Dhabi, adding that the first 2 films felt like “siblings.”

He also said Villeneuve’s added storylines, which are less explicit in the book, might be the director’s biggest creative liberty across the trilogy. Earlier in the year, Chalamet called the new film the eeriest one yet and a big swing.
The change shows on screen, too. In an appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, Chalamet said he plays Paul 15 to 20 years older and that the film calls for a real character shift.

He revealed that his hair was cut down to a 3-millimeter buzz, and that Villeneuve wanted it even shorter until Chalamet begged him to stop. He also said he is playing a version of Paul shaped by years of leadership and the weight that comes with it.
The story picks up with Paul ruling as a ruthless Emperor, confronted by the destruction carried out in his name. Trailers show his ability to see the future breaking down, while Chani and Robert Pattinson’s Scytale are seen trying to kill him.

Villeneuve opens the film with an extended scene shot on 70mm IMAX film that runs about 8 minutes with little dialogue. He has said it shows Paul’s visions from the first 2 films becoming reality, along with the consequences of his choices.
Chalamet has treated the role with extra care because it’s his last time as Paul. After wrapping in November 2025, he said during a conversation with Adam Sandler, captured by The Hollywood Reporter, that it moved him how something as out there as ‘Dune’ had taken on personal resonance.

Joining him are Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Paul’s sister, Alia. Taylor-Joy has described Alia as her most feral creation and said the film makes clear that Paul is not the story’s hero.
Taken together, the cast’s comments point to a final chapter that is darker, stranger, and more introspective than the films before it. With Chalamet saying the bar simply moved, Villeneuve appears to be closing out his saga on his own terms.
