Bill Skarsgård has built a career on playing monsters, and now he’s interested in the man who hunts them. The ‘It’ star has been linked to several comic book roles over the past year, and his latest comments show he’d like to play John Constantine. On Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Skarsgård looked back on his decade-long association with Pennywise.

His name has come up in plenty of superhero casting rumors lately. He was rumored to be in the running for Lex Luthor and Professor X. The X-Men rumor ended when, in August 2026, Marvel cast “Kraven the Hunter” star Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier, confirming that Skarsgård wouldn’t make his MCU debut with the X-Men movie.

The role he actually wants is on the DC side. When Horowitz suggested heroes he could play, Skarsgård revealed his own pick on the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “I thought Constantine was cool. I had an idea that Andy Muschietti and I could do Constantine. I just thought that it [would blend] truly visual horror and superhero. It’s a cool thing.”

The pairing has worked before. Muschietti directed the 2017 ‘It’, which starred Skarsgård and grossed $719.8 million at the box office. Fans credit much of that film’s success to Skarsgård’s Pennywise, whose unpredictable movements, unusual facial expressions, and shifting voice made the character feel inhuman.

They’re still working together. Skarsgård plays Pennywise in HBO’s ‘It: Welcome to Derry’, which Muschietti co-wrote and produced, and Season 2 has been greenlit. When Horowitz asked about the new season, Skarsgård mimed zipping his mouth shut and said his lips were sealed.

The timing works in his favor. The DCU recently confirmed a new John Constantine movie written by Francis Galluppi. While Galluppi works on the script, DC Studios hasn’t said who might star, and SlashFilm called Skarsgård’s idea of teaming up with his ‘It’ director a good one.

DC Studios is also leaning into horror right now. The new Constantine project is being developed after James Watkins’ ‘Clayface’, which is described as a body horror story with a script by Mike Flanagan. A dark, visual take on the occult detective would fit that direction.

There are complications. Skarsgård’s plan may not work out, since Muschietti is expected to direct ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ for DC Studios. On an earlier episode of the same podcast, Skarsgård said he had talked to Muschietti about that film, though he wasn’t sure where it stood.

Keanu Reeves is also still attached to the character. Reeves has been working with director Francis Lawrence and writer-producer Akiva Goldsman on a sequel, after DC Studios cleared the way for script development. However, that ‘Constantine 2’ is reportedly being developed as a DC Elseworlds project, separate from the main DC Universe, so it doesn’t rule out a separate DCU Constantine.

For now, this is just an actor sharing a dream role. Skarsgård didn’t suggest any talks with DC have happened, and said none of his superhero discussions have come close to a big part.

Still, his comments add to the conversation about who should play the DCU’s John Constantine. With his horror experience and a director he’s worked with for years, Skarsgård has a strong case.
