The interconnected tales and period setting create a unique viewing experience.

The film making its way to streaming is “Freaky Tales.” It will be available to stream on HBO Max starting Friday, August 8, 2025. The movie will also have its broadcast premiere on the HBO channel on Saturday, August 9.

“Freaky Tales” consists of four interconnected stories taking place in 1987 Oakland. The plot follows a diverse group of underdogs, including teen punks, a female rap duo, a real-life NBA star, and a debt collector played by Pascal. These characters find their paths crossing in a series of showdowns and battles. Pascal’s character is a henchman looking for a chance at redemption. The film is based on real-life historical events and is described as a “fever dream” of action and sly humor.

The movie was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Alongside Pascal, the ensemble cast includes Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, and the late Angus Cloud in one of his final roles. The film also features appearances by Tom Hanks and Too $hort.

“Freaky Tales” first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and had a limited theatrical release in April 2025.
