A New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Countdown Booth in China Is Teasing Talokan, and Fans Are Hunting for the Rest
Marvel’s marketing machine for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been running at full speed for months, and few places have seen as much of it as China. Earlier this year, the studio took over the BilibiliWorld event in Shanghai with 5 elaborate sets, including Doctor Doom’s throne, the X-Mansion, Avengers Headquarters, the Baxter Building and Wakanda, all topped off with a release-day countdown clock hanging above Doom’s seat.
A later installation in Shanghai arranged the film’s various team logos among greenery, staircases and decorative clouds. There’s a good reason Marvel is investing so heavily in the region.
Disney confirmed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will open in Chinese theaters on December 16, 2 days ahead of its US release, with the local title translating to ‘Avengers 5’. On Maoyan, China’s largest online ticketing platform, the film’s want-to-see count reached 253,000 at 69 days before release, just shy of the 264,000 ‘Avengers: Endgame’ had at the same point.
Now, a brand-new countdown booth has appeared, and it’s sending fans straight to the ocean floor. Spotted outside a large shopping center, the display features a glowing green Avengers logo above a digital clock ticking down to the December 16 release, all surrounded by a towering sculpted water wave. Fans quickly connected the crashing wave to Talokan, the underwater kingdom ruled by Namor.
According to the fan account that shared the photos, there are 6 more booths at different locations, each hinting at something different. A map accompanying the images appears to show 7 sites in total, turning the rollout into a kind of scavenger hunt for Marvel fans eager to decode every clue.

The Talokan tease isn’t coming out of nowhere. The fourth ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ teaser featured Tenoch Huerta’s Namor and Mabel Cadena’s Namora alongside the Wakandans, with Shuri and King M’Baku traveling to a vast desert to meet the Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm. Some fans have speculated that the barren landscape could be a drained Talokan.
The Talokanil were the antagonists of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, making their return in a multiverse-spanning crossover especially intriguing. Their connection to the Fantastic Four also has deep comic roots, as Namor made his first Silver Age appearance in 1962’s ‘Fantastic Four’ #4.

With 6 additional locations reportedly in play, fans are already guessing which corners of the multiverse will get the spotlight next. Given that previous Shanghai activations highlighted the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Wakanda, it seems likely each booth will represent a different team or world colliding in the film.
That approach would fit the story Marvel has been selling all along. The film brings together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and Wakandans, with heroes from 3 distinct universes set on a deadly collision course against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
The scale of the campaign reflects just how big Marvel expects the film to be in the market. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has reportedly secured an exclusive 2-week IMAX window in China after ‘Dune: Part Three’ was pushed to December 31 there, and early estimates suggest it could earn more than $300 million at the Chinese box office.

It’s also topped Douban’s list of the most anticipated foreign-language films of the year. For comparison, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ earned roughly $575.8 million in China during its first 11 days, so expectations are understandably sky-high. With the countdown clocks ticking and more booths waiting to be discovered, Marvel is clearly determined to keep fans guessing right up until release day.
Which part of the Avengers: Doomsday multiverse do you think the remaining countdown booths in China will tease next?
