Netflix is moving deeper into the world of science fiction with a new series based on Philip K. Dick’s dystopian novel The World Jones Made.

The upcoming Spanish-language series, titled The Future is Ours, is being co-produced by Dick’s estate, Electric Shepherd Productions, and K&S Films, the team behind Netflix’s Spanish-language hit The Eternaut. According to Netflix, this will be the first Spanish-language adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s work.

The Future is Ours is planned as an eight-episode limited series. The story is set in South America in 2047, a world struggling with ecological collapse.

Countries have formed a coalition called FedSur to protect the environment and control social unrest. A new figure emerges with the ability to predict the future. Police officer Hugo Crussí investigates the voice and discovers it belongs to a young preacher, Jonás Flores, who rises to become a prominent spiritual leader. Crussí becomes part of the resistance and is hunted as a result.

Netflix’s VP of Content for Latin America, Francisco Ramos, commented on the project, saying, “We have approached Philip K. Dick’s work with great respect and admiration, finding themes that are powerfully relevant today. Without a doubt, the challenge is immense, but we are proud to tell a story that will show Latin America as a force of resistance in the new order. It will be an unprecedented production of the highest ambition in Latin America, that will demonstrate that these types of stories can also be told from our countries, in Spanish and with exceptional quality.”

Mateo Gil is set to serve as showrunner for the series. Directors attached include Vincente Amorim, Daniel Rezende, and Argentine Jesús Braceras.

The team has previously worked on successful Netflix Spanish-language projects like The Eternaut, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Pedro Páramo, and Senna. The cast features Emiliano Zurita, Delfina Chaves, Enzo Vogrincic, Marleyda Soto, and Marco Antonio Caponi.

Philip K. Dick’s daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, endorsed the series, saying, “Mateo’s adaptation of the novel is inventive and bold while retaining the essence of the original. I have long believed that the rich culture and incredible talent in Latin America provide an extraordinary setting for this sort of ambitious project, and the passion expressed by the entire team is truly inspiring.”

Netflix has not yet announced a release date, but the series promises to bring Dick’s classic vision into a fresh Latin American setting, combining science fiction with political and social commentary.
