Reports say that the second season of Netflix’s Beef ended up with an unexpected production issue that pushed up post-production costs in a surprising way.

According to the report, actors Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac chose to wear hidden earbuds during filming so they could listen to music while performing their scenes. The idea was to help them stay in character and match the emotional tone of each moment more closely.

The problem came later in editing. The earbuds were visible on camera, which meant visual effects teams had to digitally remove them from a large number of shots. The show’s creator, Lee Sung Jin, said on a podcast that this cleanup work was very expensive and added a significant cost to the production.

The earbuds are usually used in film and TV to feed actors their lines. In this case, however, Mulligan and Isaac used them differently. They picked music based on the mood of each scene. In one intense sequence, they listened to Thom Yorke music to build tension. In romantic scenes, they chose songs meant to increase emotional connection.

Mulligan also said the timing of the music sometimes lined up with key moments in the scenes. She described it as something they enjoyed and said it added to the experience of filming.

Even though the method helped the actors, it created extra work for the post-production team. Every visible earbud had to be removed digitally, frame by frame, which increased the workload for visual effects artists.

Some past examples include actors in major film productions who went through physical or psychological changes during filming to improve their performances. These stories often gain attention and sometimes overshadow the actual projects themselves.

In the case of Beef, the situation is different because it is a television series with a more grounded style. Still, the report suggests that even small creative choices on set can lead to large technical consequences later in production.
