A24 Announces Michaela Coel as Writer and Director for ‘Bloodsport’ Reimagining
Michaela Coel is set to continue her successful partnership with A24 by spearheading a brand-new reimagining of the cult classic martial arts film Bloodsport. This collaboration marks the third time the multi-hyphenate creator has worked with the independent studio, and she is slated to both write and direct the feature.
The announcement has sparked significant interest within the industry, as Coel is known for her distinct and uncompromising narrative voice. The 1988 original film is widely credited with launching Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme into international superstardom.
In that version, Van Damme portrayed an American military officer who utilized his extensive ninjutsu training to survive the Kumite, a dangerous underground tournament held in Hong Kong. The film remains a cornerstone of the martial arts genre, famous for its high-stakes combat and memorable 1980s aesthetic.
Coel expressed a profound personal fascination with the psychological and physical demands placed upon professional fighters. “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity, and isolation the sport demands of them,” she remarked regarding the inspiration behind the project.
She seems particularly interested in the internal landscape of those who dedicate their lives to such a brutal and focused craft. She noted her enthusiasm for diving into this specific subculture alongside a studio that shares her creative vision.
“I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FCKING GO,”* the creator added in her statement. This energy suggests a high-octane approach to a story that has traditionally focused on physical spectacle over emotional depth.
The production team will include Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle acting as executive producers. A24 will handle both the financing and the global distribution for the upcoming martial arts film.
The involvement of Toberoff is notable given his history with the property and his experience in managing iconic intellectual property. Toberoff highlighted the historical significance of the first film and its role in popularizing the aesthetic of mixed martial arts for a mainstream audience.
“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again,” he stated.
While the original movie led to three separate sequels released throughout the late nineties, none of those installments featured Van Damme in the lead role. Previous attempts to reboot the franchise occurred as recently as 2013, though those versions ultimately failed to reach production.
Coel’s involvement signals a fresh perspective for a franchise that has largely remained dormant for decades. Currently, Coel is immersed in the production of First Day on Earth, a highly anticipated miniseries for A24, HBO, and the BBC.
She wears many hats for that project, serving as the writer, executive producer, co-director, and lead actor. Beyond her directing and writing duties, she remains one of the most sought-after actors in the industry today.
Fans will soon see her in the A24 film Mother Mary, where she appears alongside Anne Hathaway under the direction of David Lowery. She has also secured a role in Stephen Soderbergh’s upcoming project, The Christophers, opposite legendary actor Ian McKellen.
These diverse roles highlight her range as she balances high-concept drama with intense character studies. Before this latest news, Coel achieved widespread critical acclaim for creating and starring in the groundbreaking HBO series I May Destroy You.
That show earned her multiple awards and solidified her reputation as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary television. She also made a significant impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her role as Aneka in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
