A24 is on track to secure the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, one of horror’s most iconic franchises. Several studios were bidding for the film and television rights, but sources say A24 is now in the lead.

The deal has not been officially closed, but people close to the talks believe the company behind Hereditary will not let this opportunity slip away.

If the agreement is finalized, the first project would be a television series led by JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee, with Glen Powell attached behind the scenes. Powell is not expected to act in the project.

Other pitches were also in play, including a feature film from Bryan Bertino with Oz Perkins producing, and another version connected to Taylor Sheridan. A run by Jordan Peele to develop the property fell through earlier.

Roy Lee had also been developing a movie for Netflix, and reports suggest that idea may still move forward, this time with A24 producing.

The auction for the franchise was handled by the agency Verve, which has represented the rights since 2017. Exurbia Films continues to be the main production company, with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, and Kim Henkel producing. The property is represented by attorney Marios Rush.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre began in 1974 when director Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel co-wrote the original film.

The franchise has since grown into nine movies, along with comics, a novel, and even video games. At its core is Leatherface, the chainsaw-wielding killer, and his family of cannibals who terrorize outsiders in rural Texas. Over the years, the series has earned more than $250 million worldwide.

A24 taking over such a long-running horror franchise would be a big move for the studio, which is already known for its successful work in the genre.

A24 has built a strong reputation with horror fans, and it feels like a good fit for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The studio could bring fresh life to a franchise that has seen many ups and downs. But it will all depend on how they handle Leatherface and his world. What do you think, can A24 make Chainsaw scary again, or should this series be left in the past?
