A24 has released the first trailer for its upcoming horror movie Undertone, giving viewers a first look at a quiet but disturbing story that leans heavily on sound and mood rather than jump scares.

The film is written and directed by Ian Tuason, marking his first time directing a feature. Undertone follows Evy, played by Nina Kiri, a woman who co-hosts a paranormal podcast. She does not believe in ghosts, unlike her podcast partner Justin, voiced by Kris Holden-Ried. Evy’s life changes when she moves back to her childhood home to take care of her mother, who is seriously ill.

While dealing with her mother’s failing health, Evy starts receiving strange audio recordings. The tapes come from a married couple who claim they are hearing unexplained sounds inside their house. As Evy listens and digs deeper, the noises begin to affect her mental state. Fear slowly sets in, and she starts to question what is real.

One of the film’s biggest creative choices is that Evy is the only person ever seen on screen. Every other character exists only through voices. This includes her podcast partner, her mother, and the people from the recordings. The movie uses sound to build tension and tell the story, instead of relying on visuals.

The cast also includes voices from Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, Jeff Yung, Sarah Beaudin, and Brian Quintero. The movie was filmed in Toronto in early 2025.

Undertone first screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July. The movie was well received and won the top audience prize for Canadian films. Shortly after that, A24 picked up the rights to release it worldwide. The film is set to arrive in theaters in the United States and Canada on March 13, 2026, according to release details shared after the festival run.

The newly released trailer shows very little but gives off a strong sense of dread. It suggests this will be a slow and tense horror movie that trusts sound and silence to scare the audience.
