Aaron Sorkin Set to Write and Direct ‘The Social Network Part II’ Inspired by Facebook Files as New Details About the Movie Are Revealed
Aaron Sorkin is returning to the world of Facebook with a new movie. He’s writing and directing a follow-up to his 2010 hit The Social Network. This time, the film is inspired by a real investigation into Facebook’s inner workings.
The new project, The Social Network Part II, is being developed by Sony Pictures. It’s not a direct sequel, but it continues the story of the powerful tech company. According to Deadline, the film will be based on The Facebook Files, a series of articles by The Wall Street Journal.
These reports uncovered major issues inside Facebook, including its effect on young people and how it spreads harmful content around the world.
Sorkin’s first film focused on how Facebook began. It starred Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg and was directed by David Fincher. That movie was a hit with both critics and audiences. It made over $200 million and won three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
This time, Sorkin is also taking on directing duties. He’s already directed a few well-known films, including The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Molly’s Game. Sources say he wanted to return to the Facebook story for a while, but only found the right idea recently. After the January 6 Capitol attack, Sorkin said he believed Facebook had played a part. That helped shape his view for the new film, though the movie won’t focus only on that event.
Instead, the story will look at how Facebook affects users across the world, especially younger ones, and its influence on politics and public safety. It will also explore how the platform impacts countries outside the U.S.
There’s no word yet on who will be in the cast. Sorkin is still looking for actors, and there’s been no confirmation on whether Jesse Eisenberg will return as Zuckerberg. But given the subject, it’s likely Zuckerberg will be featured in some way.
Production has not started, and no release date has been announced. The film is being produced by Sorkin along with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser.
This news shows that Sorkin still has more to say about the social media giant and its role in our lives. I think this is a great time to take a deeper look at the real-world consequences of tech platforms. And with Sorkin’s sharp writing, it could turn out to be just as important as the first film.
