Abbie Cornish’s Emotional Anna Nicole Smith Scene Gives ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’ Its Most Vulnerable Look Yet

Few pop culture figures have been retold as often as Anna Nicole Smith, and few have been so widely misunderstood. From tabloid covers to a recent documentary, her story keeps getting reexamined by new generations. Now a fresh biopic is taking a different angle, and Abbie Cornish is at its center.

The film in question is ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’, a drama written and directed by Thane Economou. Instead of following Smith alone, it views her life through the eyes of her physician, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, and the legal storm that followed her death in 2007. The newest look at the project arrived on September 30, when TMZ shared a sneak peek on X promising an emotional scene with Cornish as the late model.

The clip, which TMZ obtained, shows Smith in a hospital bed, crying as she tells her doctor she feels she can’t stop messing things up. She also speaks tenderly about her loneliness before becoming a mother and about wanting to bring something good and pure into the world. It’s a stripped-back moment, far from the glamour and spectacle most people associate with her.

That tone matches what the filmmakers have hinted at since the first photos surfaced. Rather than leaning on caricature, the project appears to focus on vulnerability and the people surrounding Smith.

Cornish first appeared in character in July, when Variety debuted an exclusive image of her as Smith, and the reaction was immediate. Co-star Kal Penn, who plays Kapoor, told Variety that “She really embodied Anna Nicole in a very striking way.” He added that Cornish avoided turning Smith into an impersonation and instead brought heart and complexity to the role.

The Australian actress is no stranger to demanding parts. She rose to fame with 2004’s ‘Somersault’, starred opposite Heath Ledger in 2007’s ‘Candy’, and later appeared in ‘Sucker Punch’, ‘Limitless’, and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’. When the casting was announced, she said she was beyond excited to be part of the film.

Her commitment to detail extended to filming. She recreated Smith’s appearance at a 2005 West Hollywood Pride parade, wearing a silver faux alligator skin dress with open sides, alongside Penn.

The film is based on Kapoor’s 2017 memoir ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor: My Life Before, During and After Anna Nicole Smith’. Kapoor was charged with several felonies related to prescribing medications to Smith before she died at 39. He was later acquitted of all charges after a nine-week trial.

Linda Hamilton also stars as Ellyn Garafalo, the veteran attorney who helped defend the doctor. The movie chronicles his fight to clear his name during the tabloid frenzy of the early 2000s, while examining the circle of people around Smith. Penn has said the film gave him pause about how many enablers were along the way. Briarcliffe Entertainment is releasing the film in theaters on October 16. That is less than 3 weeks away, so promotional material like this clip will likely keep arriving.

Cornish’s film isn’t the only Smith-related project in the works. A separate drama titled ‘Hurricanna’, starring Sylvia Hoeks, was recently acquired by Magenta Light Studios, according to Deadline. That means audiences may soon have multiple portrayals to compare.

The difference will come down to focus. This version places a doctor’s perspective at the center while giving Cornish room to explore Smith’s softer side. If the newly released scene is any indication, that emotional core could be what sets it apart.
