Michael Caine is planning a comeback to the big screen at the age of 92. The legendary actor is set to return for a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, Variety reports.

The film will also see Vin Diesel reprise his role as the immortal witch hunter Kaulder. The sequel is being fast-tracked at Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company, One Race Films.

Caine retired from acting in 2023 at age 90 after his last film, The Great Escaper. At that time, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today show, “I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?’”

In the original 2015 film, Caine played Dolan, a priest who helps Kaulder stop a deadly plague caused by a witch queen. The movie, directed by Breck Eisner and inspired by Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, earned $147 million worldwide but received mostly negative reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 18% score, and Metacritic gave it 34 out of 100. Audience reactions were slightly better, with CinemaScore giving it a B−. Critics described it as flawed but entertaining. Alison Willmore of BuzzFeed News called it “terrible. It is fabulously entertaining,” while Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com praised Diesel as “especially charming.”

Although a deal for Caine hasn’t been finalized, sources expect him to reprise his role alongside Diesel. This project would mark his first appearance in a feature film since retiring.

Pairing Caine again with Vin Diesel could bring a fresh energy to the franchise and draw audiences curious to see this legendary actor back in action. What do you think about Caine coming out of retirement at 92? Share your thoughts in the comments.
