Alan Cumming is returning to the Marvel universe as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, and he isn’t holding back about what the experience has been like.

The actor first played the teleporting mutant in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, but this time around, filming has been very different.

In a recent chat with Movie Clips, Cumming described the film as “a superhero o***.” He explained, “There’s so many people in it! I feel so bad for the person who had to schedule the film. There’s like 30 of the busiest actors in the world.”

The massive cast includes returning X-Men actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn, alongside newcomers such as Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Cumming previously shared that much of his work was done in isolation. “I did the entire film in isolation. Lots of green screen, face replacement. They even gave characters fake names. I don’t know who I was acting with half the time,” he said, laughing.

He joked about past slip-ups as well, adding, “I broke the internet by mentioning something once, but honestly, I might have got it wrong.”

Years ago, Cumming admitted he was hesitant to return because of the long hours required for Nightcrawler’s heavy makeup and costume. Modern effects have made the process much easier, allowing him to step back into the role without the same strain.

Marvel officially confirmed his return during a five-hour live stream that revealed 27 confirmed cast members. The upcoming crossover is expected to be one of the biggest projects Marvel has ever attempted, bringing together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, New Avengers, and Wakandans.

Robert Downey Jr. will appear as Doctor Doom, the movie’s main villain, with the Russo brothers directing and Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely writing the script.

Cumming’s return has also been full of colorful moments thanks to his tendency to spill secrets. While guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he jokingly discussed spoilers with the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Pedro Pascal, who plays Mister Fantastic, teased him about his past leaks, reminding him, “The biggest leak that we’ve had comes from our host.”

Cumming admitted that one of his earlier comments about a fight between Nightcrawler and Mister Fantastic caused trouble, saying, “My publicist called me. You know the wrath of your publicist is, not the wrath you want to have.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit US theaters on December 18, 2026, and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. With Alan Cumming back as Nightcrawler and such a massive cast, the movie is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Marvel projects yet.
