Alexander Skarsgård Responds to Sexuality Speculation After Viral “Men and Women” Comment
Alexander Skarsgård is clearing the air after weeks of nonstop talk about his s**** online. The actor says the comments that sparked the rumors were never meant to reveal anything about his personal life. He explained the situation in a recent Variety cover interview, which was published after fan speculation exploded across social media.
The rumors started during press events for his new movie Pillion, While attending the Zurich Film Festival, Skarsgård was asked how much of his own life he brought into playing a dominant partner in a gay B*** relationship. During his answer, he said, “I mean, I do have a kid, but what I’ve done in the past, who I’ve been with, men, women…” The comment quickly went viral online.
Many fans took the phrase “men and women” as a sign that the actor was coming out as bisexual. Social media filled with theories and debates almost immediately. However, Skarsgård says that was never his intention.
Speaking to Variety, he explained, “It was definitely not an intended statement. I don’t know what I was talking about.” He added that he was trying to redirect attention back to the film and its characters rather than himself.
Skarsgård also talked about the attention surrounding his recent fashion choices. Over the past year, he has worn several bold and gender-fluid outfits, including bondage-inspired looks on red carpets. Fans again assumed the clothing was connected to his identity.
According to Skarsgård, that is not the case. He told Variety, “I never buy clothes. If you saw my closet, my wardrobe is very limited.” He said he simply enjoys the creative styling done for movie promotions.
Part of the public fascination with Skarsgård may come from the roles he has played over the years. He spent seven seasons on True Blood as Eric Northman, a pa***** vampire. In 2006, he portrayed a transgender woman in Kill Your Darlings. He has also spoken openly and jokingly about filming intimate scenes with male co-stars, once saying in a 2014 interview that Ryan Kwanten was a surprisingly good kisser.
The actor has said his comfort with LGBTQ+ stories comes from his upbringing. In a past interview, he spoke about his uncle and godfather, who is gay. Skarsgård said, “Growing up—even as a little toddler—it was just as natural as being straight.” He described his uncle as someone he admired and said homophobia never made sense to him as a teenager in Sweden.
While the internet continues to analyze his every move, Skarsgård is entering a very busy period in his career. According to NBC, he will host the 1,000th episode of Saturday Night Live on January 31, with Cardi B as the musical guest. Earlier this year, he also appeared at the Sundance Film Festival, where he premiered two new films.
One of those projects is Wicker, a dark romantic fantasy where Skarsgård plays a strawman brought to life by a lonely fisherwoman, played by Olivia Colman.
For now, Skarsgård says his focus remains on his work and his life as a father. Despite ongoing speculation, he appears content letting audiences talk while he keeps moving forward with his career.
