Alicia Vikander made a glamorous return to her hometown this week at the 2026 Gothenburg Film Festival in Sweden. The 37-year-old Oscar winner attended the festival’s opening ceremony on Friday, January 23, and wowed the crowd on the red carpet, according to Vogue Scandinavia.

For the gala, Vikander wore a floor-length chocolate brown gown with a detailed mesh design. The dress fit her perfectly and had small beaded details that sparkled under the lights. She kept her accessories simple with delicate earrings and open-toed heels, sticking to her classic Scandinavian style.

This festival appearance was especially meaningful for Vikander. She started her career as a child performer at the Gothenburg Opera House, and returning to the city is a full-circle moment. Her red carpet appearance comes after a busy few months of international events and filming, including the Venice Film Festival last year.

Vikander has a packed year ahead. She stars in the South Korean sci-fi thriller Hope, directed by Na Hong-jin. The film also features her husband, Michael Fassbender, marking their first on-screen collaboration since The Light Between Oceans.

She is also part of the American drama The Last Day, which finished filming in New York. The movie, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, explores a writer and mother navigating her life and creativity. It’s said to resonate with Vikander’s own experiences balancing work and family.

Fans will also hear her voice in the family fantasy film The Turning Door, alongside Jamie Dornan, Gillian Anderson, and Bill Nighy. The movie follows a young girl traveling through a magical world to save her parents, with Vikander voicing one of the main characters.

Off-screen, Vikander recently moved back to London with Fassbender and their two sons. After nearly eight years in Lisbon, the family returned to the UK so she could be closer to friends and pursue theater work. She is currently preparing for a stage production of The Lady From The Sea at London’s Bridge Theatre.

Vikander’s career continues to show her versatility. She moves between thrillers like The Assessment, historical dramas, and animated projects. Her choice of challenging roles has made her one of the most respected actresses of her generation.

Even in her late 30s, Vikander remains a regular at film festivals and a representative for major fashion brands. Her appearance in Gothenburg reminded fans of her roots while she continues to shine on the global stage.

Do you think Alicia Vikander will score another Oscar nomination for The Last Day, or are you more excited to see her sci-fi project with Fassbender in Hope? Share your thoughts in the comments.
