‘Jennifer’s Body’ has had one of horror’s most impressive comebacks. Directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, the 2009 horror comedy starred Megan Fox as Jennifer Check, a high school student who turns into a succubus after a failed ritual by a rock band, and Amanda Seyfried as her best friend, Anita “Needy” Lesnicki.

The film struggled on release, earning about $31.6 million worldwide against a $16 million budget. It has since been reappraised as a feminist cult classic, and Cody has said it was marketed all wrong, aimed at young men instead of female viewers.

Now the sequel may have its full central duo. Dread Central reports that Seyfried is set to reunite with Fox for ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’, with Kusama directing from Cody’s script. The news comes from scooper Daniel Richtman, who shared it on Patreon. The film is reportedly moving forward at 20th Century Studios, although neither Seyfried’s return nor the studio’s involvement has been officially confirmed.

The report adds to news that first surfaced in the summer. In July, Dread Central exclusively reported that Fox and Kusama would return, but at the time, it wasn’t clear whether Seyfried would come back.

A Production Weekly listing from this summer also pointed to an October production start. PHANTASMAG has noted, however, that a later date now seems more likely based on Cody’s recent comments. No release date has been set yet.

Cody has been open about the sequel’s progress. Speaking on the “Petticoat Revolution” podcast, she confirmed that the script is finished and described the sequel as happening imminently.

She also hinted at the story’s direction. Cody explained that she wanted to explore even more of why Jennifer is a sympathetic character, describing her as isolated, lonely, and insecure both before and after her transformation.

The writer said that people often remember the original’s most powerful moments but overlook the quieter scenes where Jennifer is diminished. She praised Fox for playing both sides of the character so well.

Cody also suggested that the sequel’s release will feel very different. She said the atmosphere going into this film is changed because everyone now understands what the original was going for. That’s a big shift from 2009. The first film earned just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and a C- CinemaScore, though critics praised its dialogue and cast even then.

Seyfried’s return would be especially meaningful for fans. The relationship between Jennifer and Needy is at the heart of the original story, with Needy trying to stop her best friend’s killing spree while dealing with a friendship that was already complicated.

Dread Central’s original review called that relationship by far the most compelling thing in the film. Bringing both actresses back gives the sequel a chance to continue that bond. Plot details are still under wraps, so it’s unclear how their story will pick up. Fans will have to wait to find out how a sequel brings the pair back together.

Both actresses have stayed busy since the original. Fox recently appeared in ‘Till Death’, while Seyfried’s recent projects include ‘The Housemaid’ and ‘You Can See Everything’. Cody’s connection to the world has also continued. Her 2024 film ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ takes place in the same continuity as ‘Jennifer’s Body’, and the original is now streaming on Hulu.
