Amanda Seyfried Sets Sights on Sweeney & Carpenter for ‘Mamma Mia 3’

Amanda Seyfried is once again talking about her hopes for a third “Mamma Mia” movie, and this time she’s imagining more famous blondes joining the fun.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Tonight at the Governors Awards, she shared that she would love to bring Sydney Sweeney and Sabrina Carpenter into the next film.

Seyfried has already said she thinks Carpenter would fit perfectly into the “Mamma Mia” world. Now she’s also rooting for her “The Housemaid” co-star Sydney Sweeney to join the cast.

When ET asked her if “Mamma Mia 3” was really happening, she said, “Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure ‘Mamma Mia 3’ is a done deal.”

The last movie, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” went back in time to tell Donna’s story. Seyfried imagines the next film returning to the present, following her character Sophie again, but with some new faces around her.

She explained that even though some people thought Carpenter could play her daughter, she has another idea. “I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” she said. “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

There have been mixed signals about a third movie over the years. Producer Judy Craymer said in June 2020 that a new film was in development and that new ABBA songs from the band’s reunion could be used. But she also said the pandemic slowed everything down. When ABBA released their album “Voyage” in 2021, fans became even more hopeful.

Not everyone was sure it would happen, though. In May 2023, ABBA’s Benny Andersson told BBC Two’s Newsnight that the idea of another sequel felt like “wishful thinking.” However, in October 2023, Craymer once again said that a third movie “will happen.”

For now, Seyfried is keeping the excitement alive, and her dream cast keeps getting bigger and blonder.
