Amanda Seyfried Shares What It Will Take to Make ‘Mamma Mia 3’
Amanda Seyfried opened up about the potential for a third Mamma Mia! movie during an interview with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The actress, who plays Sophie Sheridan in the franchise, revealed that while a new installment isn’t officially set, discussions have been happening.
Seyfried, who reprised her role in 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, said the original cast—including Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, and Meryl Streep, has shown interest in returning. Mamma Mia! remains a massive success, earning over $610 million worldwide, making it one of the top films of 2008.
“Yeah, it is,” Seyfried said about third film’s development, before cautiously adding, “I think,” and laughing. She explained that big movies like this often depend on studio timing rather than just story ideas. She shared that the release of the sequel was influenced by scheduling conflicts with other major films, like Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Currently, Seyfried is at TIFF promoting The Testament of Ann Lee, a musical drama about the founder of the Shaker movement. The film also stars Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson, and Christopher Abbott. A wide release date for the movie has not yet been announced, as it has only premiered at film festivals so far.
From what Seyfried shared, it seems that a third Mamma Mia! could happen—but fans might need to be patient. Timing, story, and studio plans will play a big role in whether the movie moves forward.
Personally, I think it would be exciting to see the original cast reunite again. The franchise has a loyal fanbase, and a third film could bring back the joy and music fans love. What do you think? Would you like to see Mamma Mia 3? Share your thoughts in the comments.
