Blade Runner 2099 is coming to Amazon Prime Video in 2026. The update was provided by Laura Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series, Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, in an internal memo announcing promotions for two executives, Kara Smith and Tom Lieber.

The series is a new sci-fi miniseries created by Silka Luisa and is part of the Blade Runner franchise. It continues the story from the original Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), which are based on Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

The cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Olwen, a Replicant facing the end of her life, Hunter Schafer as Cora, and Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Tom Burke, Maurizio Lombardi, and Daniel Rigby in other key roles.

The project has been in the works for several years. In November 2021, Ridley Scott announced that a pilot had been written, along with a series bible and plans for ten episodes.

In February 2022, the title Blade Runner 2099 was revealed, and it was confirmed that the series would be developed for Amazon Prime Video. Silka Luisa was set to write and executive produce the show, and Ridley Scott was involved in the early development phase.

Amazon officially ordered it as a miniseries in September 2022, with Tom Spezialy joining as a writing executive producer.

Casting was confirmed throughout 2024. In May, Michelle Yeoh joined as Olwen, and Hunter Schafer was added as co-lead in June. July and August saw the addition of Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi as series regulars.

The series was originally set to begin shooting in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but production was postponed to 2024 due to the 2023 WGA strike.

After the strike, the production left Northern Ireland, returning £1.5 million of the £4.1 million fund awarded by the Northern Ireland Screen. Richard Williams, Chief Executive of NI Screen, said this “left a gap in Northern Ireland’s production schedule.”

Production officially began in early May 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic, with filming starting in June. Rob Hardy and Ula Pontikos served as cinematographers, and filming wrapped in late December 2024.

Blade Runner 2099 promises to continue the story of the iconic sci-fi world, and fans can expect it to arrive on Amazon Prime Video in 2026.
