Amazon Finally Gives ‘RoboCop’ Reboot the Go-Ahead Under New TV Boss
After years of being stuck in development, the long-awaited RoboCop reboot series is finally moving forward at Prime Video. The project, which has been in talks for several years, is now officially gaining traction under Amazon’s new leadership.
The series has seen several changes over time. Back in 2024, reports suggested that Peter Ocko, known for Lodge 49, had signed on as the showrunner and writer, while James Wan was expected to serve as executive producer.
Original RoboCop star Peter Weller has expressed openness to returning, telling The Ankler, “Don’t know, good question. If the stars align.” Nancy Allen, who starred alongside Weller in the original films, also commented, “I think I’d have to read something first. I think the best movie was the first one, and everything since then has not really lived up to what it should be, so who knows, maybe they’ll figure it out for a TV show.”
It is not yet clear if the new series greenlit by Amazon is the same version that Ocko was developing. Fans are also unsure whether the show will be a full reboot or if it will connect to the original RoboCop films. Previous descriptions of Ocko’s project suggested a story about “a giant tech conglomerate collaborating with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime.”
Weller and Allen recently reunited for RoboCop: Rogue City, a 2023 video game that continued the story of the original films. The game was well-received and may have influenced Amazon’s decision to move forward with the TV reboot.
RoboCop has a long history on both the big and small screens. The original film trilogy ran from 1987 to 1993, and an unrelated reboot film came out in 2014. On television, RoboCop first appeared in a 1994 series that lasted only one season. A miniseries called RoboCop: Prime Directives aired in 2001, and there were two animated series in 1988 and 1998. Despite these previous attempts, none have matched the impact of the first movie.
The reboot has the potential to reintroduce RoboCop to a new audience while honoring the franchise’s legacy. With Amazon pushing the project forward, fans may finally see a modern take on the iconic cyborg law enforcer.
This reboot could be a great chance to bring RoboCop back into the spotlight if done thoughtfully. Using a strong showrunner and balancing action with the franchise’s classic tone will be key. What do you think about the RoboCop reboot finally moving forward? Share your thoughts in the comments.
