Amazon MGM Studios has officially ordered a new Stargate series for Prime Video, marking another major move in the studio’s push to revive well-known MGM properties. The news was shared by Amazon MGM Studios, confirming that the long-running sci-fi franchise is getting a fresh chapter led by writer and producer Martin Gero.

The show comes from Gero, who has a long history with the Stargate universe and is known for creating Blindspot. He will lead the new project as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Other producers include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who worked on the original 1994 Stargate film. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who helped build the previous Stargate shows, are joining as consulting producers.

Gero said he sees this moment as a full-circle return to the place his TV career began. In a statement shared through Amazon MGM Studios, he said, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis… Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.”

He added that the new series is meant both for longtime fans and newcomers, saying, “For those who’ve kept the gate active… this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

The franchise centers around the Stargate, a powerful device that creates wormholes for instant travel across the universe.

Since the first movie debuted in 1994, the brand has grown into several TV series, including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, plus an animated show and digital spinoffs. According to Amazon MGM Studios, the goal is to honor what came before while pushing the story into new territory.

Nick Pepper, Head of U.S. SVOD TV Development for the studio, said the team sees the franchise as a perfect fit for Prime Video.

He explained, “Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades… we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience.”

The Stargate order follows Amazon’s broader strategy of building series from MGM’s well-known titles after acquiring the studio in 2022. Projects already underway include a Legally Blonde prequel series, a Tomb Raider show starring Sophie Turner, and a new Barbershop series. Other MGM properties, such as Poltergeist, are still in development.
