Amazon’s upcoming Mass Effect TV series may be facing major changes before it even hits screens. According to a report from The Ankler via IGN, Peter Friedlander, head of global TV at Amazon MGM Studios, has asked the writers to adjust the scripts to make the show “more appealing to non-gamers.”

The series, which is close to getting a formal series order, is based on the hugely popular video game franchise from BioWare. While fans of the games are eagerly anticipating the adaptation, the request to cater to a broader audience could raise eyebrows among long-time players. As the source notes, adaptations often face the challenge of balancing fan expectations with attracting new viewers.

This isn’t the first time a video game adaptation has faced scrutiny. Shows like Halo have been criticized for not capturing the feel of their source material, while others, like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, have been slammed for being too chaotic and reference-heavy. A careful rewrite might help Mass Effect avoid these pitfalls by making the story more accessible to viewers who aren’t familiar with the game.

Meanwhile, BioWare itself has been navigating uncertainty following the Saudi-backed buyout of EA. Owlcat’s Expanse-inspired CRPG and Exodus, set for a 2027 release, are generating excitement for players who enjoy Mass Effect-style storytelling. Even Star Wars Zero Company has drawn praise for its squad-based gameplay reminiscent of BioWare’s work.
