Jaalen Best plays Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, with Omari Hardwick as Cassius Clay Sr. and Dana Gourrier as Ali’s mother, Odessa Clay. Best’s earlier credits include ‘Magnum P.I.’, and the role marks a major step forward for him. Reports note that he trained intensively, studying Ali’s fighting style and mannerisms.

Amin Joseph portrays Sonny Liston, Michael Ealy plays Malcolm X, Giovanni Ribisi plays trainer Angelo Dundee and Kai Parham plays Ali’s brother Rudy Clay. The story begins with Clay’s Olympic gold medal in 1960 and follows his rise toward the 1964 heavyweight championship fight against Liston. Set against segregated America, it examines the pressures of family, identity and faith during a period of deep social change.

Amazon describes the series as an intimate exploration of Ali’s life that looks beyond victories and defeats, focusing on a man who was a husband, a father, a brother and a son. Watkins has said he wants to explore the moments surrounding celebrated fights so that the man behind the legend takes center stage.

Watkins, the creator of ‘Cross’, also directs the opening episodes. Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society produces alongside Roc Nation, Authentic Studios, Polygram Entertainment and Grace A Storytelling Company, and Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, is an executive producer. The series was greenlit in July 2024, began production in May 2025 and filmed across Ontario in Toronto, Cobourg and Hamilton.
