Amazon’s Most Controversial TV Show Just Got a Major Season 3 Update
Big news for fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon just confirmed that Season 3 is officially in production. The update came with a short clip posted on social media showing Sauron’s crown, teasing his dark return in the upcoming episodes.
This season will take place several years after the events of Season 2, diving right into the peak of the war between the Elves and Sauron. It will also show how the Dark Lord begins creating the One Ring, the powerful object that could help him win the war and take over all of Middle-earth.
According to Amazon, the new season is once again being led by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, with directors Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Stefan Schwartz all confirmed to direct multiple episodes. Brändström and Hamri have worked on the show before, while Schwartz is new to the series. Brändström is also stepping into a bigger role this time as executive producer.
The third season brings back familiar faces like Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, and Charlie Vickers as Sauron. Daniel Weyman is returning as Gandalf. Some fresh names are joining the cast, too. Jamie Campbell Bower is said to play a major new character, a high-born knight possibly linked to Galadriel’s story.
Eddie Marsan is also coming in as a mysterious character codenamed “Dromm,” and there’s some fan buzz that he might be related to Durin IV, based on clues from the end of Season 2.
Filming is now happening at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, which Amazon secured through a long-term deal. The show previously used Bray Film Studios for Season 2, but Shepperton is now ready and has become the new home for the series. Cameras officially started rolling in mid-May 2025, after pre-production wrapped earlier that year.
Writing for Season 3 actually started back in October 2024, with a full team behind it including Payne, McKay, Justin Doble, and several other writers like Ava Wong Davies, Ben Tagoe, and Sarah Anson. Amazon confirmed the season was greenlit in February 2025.
Amazon’s plan with The Rings of Power is to shape each season around major events from Tolkien’s writings. For this one, it’s all about the height of the war and the rise of the One Ring. The showrunners are sticking closely to the Second Age timeline that Tolkien outlined in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings.
As of now, Season 3 doesn’t have a set release date, but it will stream on Amazon Prime Video. Fans can expect more magic, more war, and a deeper dive into the rise of evil in Middle-earth.
