Amazon’s ‘Succession’ Clone Scores Season 2 Renewal!
Amazon Prime Video’s hit show “We Were Liars” is coming back for a second season, Variety has reported. The first season, based on E. Lockhart’s popular novel, premiered in June and quickly drew attention for its mix of mystery and family drama.
The show follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her close group of friends, known as the Liars, as they spend their summers on Cadence’s grandfather’s private island in New England.
The Sinclair family is rich, powerful, and glamorous, but a tragic accident changes everything for Cadence, leaving secrets and tension that fans are eager to see unfold.
Series creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie shared their excitement about the renewal. “We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans. The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up,” they said.
The first season starred Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence, with Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis, and Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse in supporting roles.
E. Lockhart, the author of the books, also commented on what’s coming next. “MacKenzie and Plec have big, big plans for Season Two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well,” she said.
The show’s first season got mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 60% approval rating based on 25 critic reviews, saying, “We Were Liars might be Succession-lite, but its juicy family dynamics mixed with psychological intrigue will leave viewers amply satisfied and quietly shattered.”
Metacritic gave it a score of 53 out of 100, which counts as average. Critics from The Age and TheWrap compared it to shows like Succession, Big Little Lies, and Cruel Summer, praising its mix of family drama and suspense. Kylie Northover from The Age gave it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it “essentially a junior Succession, but there’s enough adult soapiness for We Were Liars to appeal to a broad audience.”

Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, highlighted the talent behind the show. “The season two renewal of ‘We Were Liars’ is yet another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent. This series, which Julie and Carina crafted so beautifully from E. Lockhart’s beloved books, absolutely deserves a deeper dive. And we’re grateful to Amazon MGM for their collaboration and partnership,” she said.
With the second season confirmed, fans can expect more secrets, drama, and twists as the Liars’ story continues on Beechwood Island.
