Amie Mackenzie’s Carol Ferris Just Made Her DCU Debut in ‘Lanterns’
Few love interests in superhero comics carry as much history as Carol Ferris. Introduced as the aerospace heiress and executive at Ferris Aircraft, she has been tangled up with Hal Jordan for decades, sometimes as his romantic partner and sometimes as his enemy. Her romance with Hal has spanned nearly 70 years of comic book history.
That long backstory is part of why her absence from the DC Universe has been so noticeable. Blake Lively played Carol in the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ film opposite Ryan Reynolds, but the character had never appeared in the new DCU until now. Casting was never confirmed or even teased, which made her arrival a genuine surprise.
Carol Ferris, played by Amie Mackenzie, has made her DCU debut in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’. The character appears in Episode 6 at Hal Jordan’s funeral, marking her first live-action appearance in the new continuity.
Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan wrote his own eulogy expecting a grand sendoff, but only John Stewart, Sheriff Kerry Kane, Guy Gardner, and Carol turned up. Carol explains that Sheriff Kane invited her, and she sums up her relationship with Hal as “history.” She also delivers a pointed line about how the only friendship that stuck was the one on his finger.
The dialogue implies a romantic past that didn’t last, without spelling out the details. The show keeps Carol’s relationship with Hal deliberately vague in this iteration. Her screen time is short but it carries major implications about the character’s place in the larger DCU.

Mackenzie is a Denver-based actress who became a fixture of Colorado theater for decades before moving to screen work. Viewers may recognize her from ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘The Madison’ and ‘Mountainhead’, among other projects. Her credits include ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, the 2025 Netflix medical drama ‘Pulse’ and the Yellowstone spin-off ‘1923’.

For comic readers, the big question is whether this cameo is a setup for Star Sapphire. In the comics, Carol first became Star Sapphire in 1962’s Green Lantern #16, when the alien Zamarons infused her with the power of a gem and brainwashed her into fighting Hal. As of 2007’s Green Lantern vol. 4 #20, she leads the Star Sapphire Corps, whose violet rings are powered by love and who are now allies of the Green Lantern Corps.

‘Lanterns’ latest chapter doesn’t indicate whether Carol will return. That has left fans divided, the show shouldn’t have bothered introducing her with Hal dead and her chances of becoming Star Sapphire at zero. It’s a fair reaction, given that the episode centers on Hal’s funeral.

Even as a brief appearance, the cameo does a lot of quiet work for the DCU. It establishes that Hal had a life and a complicated romantic history before the events of the series. It also plants Carol in the continuity so that any future story can build on her without needing an origin reintroduction.
As for the wider universe, the comics have used Carol as everything from a villain to a hero and a member of Justice League Unlimited. That range gives the DCU plenty of options if it decides to bring her back. For now, the funeral scene works as an intriguing teaser rather than a promise.
