David F. Sandberg, known for his work on Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, is set to direct a new version of the classic horror film The Amityville Horror.

This reimagining is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The script is being written by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, who recently contributed to The Conjuring: Last Rites, a film that has achieved significant box office success.

The original The Amityville Horror, released in 1979, was based on Jay Anson’s 1977 book, which tells the story of the Lutz family experiencing paranormal events in a house where a tragic mass murder occurred.

Despite skepticism about the veracity of the Lutzes’ claims, the story has captivated audiences, leading to numerous sequels and adaptations over the years.

Sandberg’s involvement in this project follows his recent work on the film adaptation of the video game Until Dawn, released earlier this year.

He has a history of collaborating with The Safran Company, having worked on Annabelle: Creation and the Shazam! films. For this new Amityville Horror film, Sandberg will produce alongside Peter Safran and John Rickard, with Natalia Safran and Lotta Losten serving as executive producers.

While specific details about the plot of the reimagined film are currently under wraps, the involvement of experienced horror filmmakers suggests that the project aims to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic haunted house tale.

Fans of the franchise can look forward to a new interpretation of this classic horror story, though further information about casting and release dates has yet to be announced.
