Every autumn, one night at Lincoln Center belongs to Sarah Jessica Parker. As Vice Chair of the New York City Ballet’s Board of Directors, the ‘Sex and the City’ star conceived the company’s annual Fall Fashion Gala, which launched in 2012 with a celebration of the legendary designer Valentino. The Sarah Jessica Parker NYC Ballet gala tradition has since become one of the most anticipated style moments on the city’s calendar.

The event pairs fashion designers with choreographers, and over the years it has featured costumes by more than 30 designers, including Thom Browne, Sarah Burton, Carolina Herrera, Iris van Herpen, and Dries Van Noten. Parker’s connection to the company runs deep, too, as her relationship with NYCB began when she attended its school.

This year’s gala took place on Thursday, October 1, and Parker once again arrived with her husband, Matthew Broderick, by her side. TMZ shared a short video of the couple on the red carpet, encouraging viewers to look closely at the details on the back of her hair.

Those details were worth the extra glance. Parker wore her blonde hair in a long ponytail woven with soft ribbons and bows that trailed down her back, a playful, balletic touch fitting for the occasion. She paired it with a sheer, blush-toned embellished dress featuring delicate ribbon details and carried a small white bag.

Broderick kept things classic in a black tuxedo with a bow tie, glasses, and a white floral boutonniere. In the clip, the pair share a warm moment as they pose together in front of the step-and-repeat.

The evening also marked a big moment for the company on stage. The gala featured world premiere ballets by choreographers Jennifer Archibald, who made her first work for NYCB, and Alysa Pires, who created her second piece for the company.

It’s all part of NYCB’s Fall Season, which runs from September 22 through October 18. The season will also include a special one-time-only performance honoring principal dancer Adrian Danchig-Waring, who will retire from the company on October 18.

Parker has a long track record of making a statement at this event. Last year, she stunned in a black Iris van Herpen haute couture gown with giant floor-length wings, a dramatic departure from her usual style. She wore her hair in a sleek bun that night, letting the sculptural wings do all the talking.

In 2024, she went for head-to-toe silver by Oscar de la Renta, styling her hair in a slicked-back ponytail. A year earlier, she leaned into ballerina-core with an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress and a large black bow in her hair.

That 2023 look offers an interesting parallel to this year’s ribbon-wrapped hairstyle. Parker clearly has a soft spot for bows, and her latest outing gave the trend a more romantic, whimsical twist.

Parker and Broderick have been a fixture at the gala for years. The couple met in 1991 through Parker’s brothers and have been married for nearly 3 decades, frequently stepping out together at theater openings and fashion events around New York.

Their latest appearance proved that some traditions never get old. Between Parker’s inventive styling and the company’s new world premieres, the gala delivered exactly the kind of fashion-meets-dance magic it was designed to celebrate.
