Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman Movie Just Found the Perfect New Home After Amazon’s Awkward Exit

Hollywood has spent weeks buzzing about the fate of a film too pointed for its original backer to touch, and now that story has a resolution. The project centers on one of Silicon Valley’s most polarizing figures, and its journey from prestige studio darling to industry hot potato says a lot about how tangled entertainment and Big Tech have become. Fans of director Luca Guadagnino have been watching closely, since his name alone tends to generate awards season chatter.

That film is ‘Artificial,’ Guadagnino’s dramatization of Sam Altman’s chaotic 2023 ouster and reinstatement at OpenAI, and its distribution rights had been sitting in limbo for weeks. Amazon MGM Studios, which originally set the movie up for an early 2027 release, dropped it after Amazon struck a massive investment deal with Altman’s company, a move that raised eyebrows given the film’s unflattering subject matter. Buyers including Netflix, A24, Focus Features, and Warner Bros.’ Clockwork label all reportedly passed after screenings arranged by the film’s sales team at CAA Media Finance.

Now, according to journalist Matt Belloni and widely shared reporting, indie distributor NEON has officially acquired ‘Artificial.’ Neon confirmed the purchase and said it plans to release the film this year with hopes of competing in the upcoming Oscar race. The deal ends a tense stretch where it genuinely seemed like the nearly finished project might struggle to find any theatrical home at all.

The movie carries a hefty $40 million budget and follows the turbulent period when Altman, played by Andrew Garfield, was fired and then swiftly rehired by OpenAI. NEON reportedly beat out rival bidder Mubi with a $20 million plus offer, making it the distributor’s most expensive acquisition to date, surpassing what it paid for 2025’s ‘Together’ and 2023’s ‘Ferrari.’ That kind of financial commitment signals real confidence in the film’s awards potential.

The cast reads like a who’s who of current character actors, with Monica Barbaro playing former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati and Yura Borisov as co-founder Ilya Sutskever, alongside Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Angus Imrie, Chris O’Dowd, and Mark Rylance. Ike Barinholtz also appears as Elon Musk, and the script comes from former ‘SNL’ writer Simon Rich.

Insiders describe the finished film as unusually dark, with one buyer telling Belloni it is grim and leaves audiences unsettled about the future of humanity in an AI driven world. ‘Artificial’ has drawn comparisons to ‘The Social Network,’ another unflattering origin story about a tech titan, though sources suggest this one cuts even sharper. Amazon, for its part, publicly praised Guadagnino as an award winning filmmaker while distancing itself from the finished product.

No official release date has landed yet, but with NEON now steering the ship, industry watchers expect ‘Artificial’ to surface on the fall festival circuit, possibly even Venice, where several of Guadagnino’s films have premiered. Given the cultural moment AI currently occupies, this could end up being one of the most talked about awards contenders of the season. Do you think ‘Artificial’ can turn Sam Altman’s messiest year into Andrew Garfield’s next big awards run?
