Andy Muschietti Jokes He Made ‘The Flash’ Drunk, and DC Fans Can’t Decide Whether to Laugh

Few superhero movies carry as much baggage as ‘The Flash’, and Andy Muschietti has spent years answering for it. Now the director has offered his most unfiltered take yet on the DC misfire, and the internet has plenty to say about it.

The film’s road to theaters was famously rocky, weighed down by years of delays, reshoots, and the off-screen chaos surrounding star Ezra Miller, and it ultimately cost Warner Bros. around $200M in losses. Drawing from the ‘Flashpoint’ storyline, the movie followed Barry Allen as he went back in time to prevent his mother’s death, with a returning Michael Keaton as Batman after 30 years away from the role.

The latest chapter in that saga came from an unlikely venue. In a clip from an ‘Awkward Puppets‘ appearance, Muschietti claimed he made ‘The Flash’ while drunk and insisted the result was fantastic. The host, identified as Doll, fired back that this explains a lot.

The setting adds another layer to the joke. ‘Awkward Puppets’ is the puppet comedy series created by Rudy Mancuso, who played Albert Desmond in ‘The Flash’. The 2 remain close collaborators, with Andy and Barbara Muschietti set to produce Mancuso’s ‘Stand-In’ for Amazon MGM Studios, from a story by Muschietti himself.

The tongue-in-cheek remark marks a shift in tone from his earlier reflections. At one point, Muschietti suggested the film failed because many people weren’t interested in the Flash as a character, a claim that left many fans scratching their heads.

He struck a more measured note while promoting ‘It: Welcome to Derry’. “We just moved on and understood that sometimes there’s a headwind and a project that you dedicated a lot of work to,” Muschietti told The Playlist. “And we’re very proud of it. I think it’s a good movie.”

In that same conversation, he suggested the film’s criticism was driven by people who never bothered to watch it, while conceding that Miller’s behavior created an undeniable publicity crisis. Against that backdrop, joking about drinking on set reads less like a confession and more like a filmmaker finally laughing at the whole ordeal.

The bigger reason the clip struck a nerve is Muschietti’s DCU future. He was confirmed in 2023 to direct ‘The Brave and the Bold’, the DC Universe’s Batman film that will introduce Damian Wayne as the new Robin. That project has since stalled repeatedly.

In August, journalist Dan Marcus reported being told by Muschietti that the film had been put on hold until the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger is settled. Days later, a rumor surfaced claiming Muschietti is not doing the film at all, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

That uncertainty colored the replies to the clip. One user called it a waste and lamented that he was picked for Batman, while another quipped that he would presumably stay sober for ‘The Brave and the Bold’. A third defended Muschietti, calling the comment an obvious joke, dismissing the idea that anyone could make an entire movie drunk, and praising his work on ‘Welcome to Derry’.

That last point is hard to argue with. Muschietti has returned to familiar territory with HBO’s ‘Welcome to Derry’, the ‘It’ prequel series bringing back Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, where he directed 4 of the series’ 9 episodes. A 2nd season is already in the works, reportedly drawing from a 1930s-era subplot from Stephen King’s novel.

Whether his punchline was pure self-deprecation or a sly wink at critics, it proves Muschietti has finally found a way to talk about ‘The Flash’ without sounding defensive. For a film that has haunted him longer than any Pennywise scare, that might be the healthiest take yet.
