Andy Muschietti Reportedly Puts ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ on Hold Amid Merger Uncertainty

DC Studios’ corner of Hollywood has spent much of the past year navigating uncertainty that has very little to do with capes or cowls. While James Gunn’s DC Universe has pushed forward with releases like ‘Superman,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and ‘Lanterns,’ one of its most anticipated future titles has quietly stayed stuck in neutral behind the scenes.

That title is ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold,’ director Andy Muschietti’s long-planned introduction of the Dark Knight into Gunn’s rebooted universe. The project, built around Bruce Wayne raising his biological son Damian Wayne as the new Robin, has bounced between confirmations and doubts for years, with Muschietti reaffirming as recently as late 2025 that he remained attached and that a screenwriter was still shaping the script.

Now, according to a new report, Muschietti has reportedly said all work on ‘The Brave and the Bold’ is on hold until after the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger has settled, putting the film’s momentum on pause for reasons entirely outside his or the studio’s creative control.

The freeze lines up with a much larger story engulfing Warner Bros. Discovery as a whole. Paramount’s $111 billion attempt to acquire the studio has been tied up in court after a coalition of a dozen state attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America filed suit, arguing the deal would significantly reduce competition across film, television, and news.

That legal fight led Paramount to agree it would not close the acquisition until June 1, 2027, or five days after a judge rules on the case, whichever comes first. With a trial now set and no resolution expected for months, both studios have reportedly been left in a holding pattern, with staffers describing a mix of anxiety and uncertainty over which projects move forward and which stay frozen.

That climate helps explain why a Batman movie already years into development would suddenly stall rather than push toward production. Big-budget tentpoles tied to a studio’s future identity are exactly the kind of projects likely to sit still while ownership itself remains unresolved.

This isn’t the first time ‘The Brave and the Bold’ has found itself in limbo. The film lost its release date entirely after Gunn’s DCU slate was first announced, faced persistent rumors that Muschietti had quietly exited following the box office disappointment of ‘The Flash,’ and only regained clearer footing once Christina Hodson was confirmed to be writing the script and Muschietti reaffirmed his involvement.

Muschietti’s recent run directing the ‘It’ prequel series ‘Welcome to Derry’ has also helped restore some fan confidence in his ability to steer a major DC project, even after ‘The Flash’ underperformed. That goodwill may end up being tested further if the merger uncertainty drags the Batman film’s timeline out even longer than expected.

For now, ‘The Brave and the Bold’ remains without an official release date, and this latest development suggests fans shouldn’t expect meaningful movement until Warner Bros. Discovery’s ownership situation is finally resolved one way or another. Given the pace of the ongoing legal battle, that could mean a considerably longer wait for Damian Wayne’s live-action debut than anyone initially expected.
