Anime is filled with protagonists who train tirelessly to become the strongest warriors in their respective universes. There exists a fascinating subset of characters who already possess immense power yet prefer napping over saving the world. These reluctant heroes often hide their devastating abilities behind a facade of indifference or extreme lethargy. They only unleash their true potential when absolutely necessary or when their friends are in dire danger. This trope provides comic relief while building anticipation for the inevitable moment they get serious.

Saitama

Saitama
Madhouse

The protagonist of ‘One Punch Man’ serves as the ultimate example of a hero suffering from existential boredom. Saitama trained so hard that he broke his devastating limiter and lost his hair in the process. He defeats every enemy with a single punch which leaves him feeling unfulfilled during combat. Most of his days are spent reading manga or worrying about supermarket sales rather than seeking out villains. His overwhelming strength makes fighting feel like a mundane chore rather than a thrilling challenge.

Beerus

Beerus
Toei Animation

This God of Destruction from ‘Dragon Ball Super’ possesses the power to obliterate entire solar systems with a tap of his finger. Beerus spends the majority of his existence sleeping for decades at a time to pass the centuries. He is more motivated by the promise of delicious Earth food than by the prospect of a good battle. His feline nature leads him to prioritize grooming and napping over his divine duties of destruction. Even when he engages in combat he rarely uses his full power against his opponents.

Shikamaru Nara

Shikamaru Nara
Pierrot

Shikamaru from the ‘Naruto’ series is a tactical genius with an IQ over 200 who views almost everything as a drag. He possesses the Shadow Possession Jutsu which allows him to control opponents and execute complex strategies. His primary goal in life is to watch the clouds drift by and live an unremarkable existence. Despite his lack of motivation he frequently finds himself in leadership roles due to his unparalleled intellect. He fights only to protect his friends and the future of the Hidden Leaf Village.

Ryner Lute

Zexcs

The protagonist of ‘The Legend of the Legendary Heroes’ holds the power of the Alpha Stigma within his eyes. Ryner constantly claims that his dream is to create a kingdom where afternoon naps are mandatory. He is capable of deconstructing magic and erasing matter when his cursed eyes are activated. His incredible magical prowess contrasts sharply with his constant desire to avoid work and sleep all day. He accepts dangerous missions solely to secure a peaceful environment for his future slumber.

Kizaru

One Piece Theory Explained: Is Kizaru Actually a Good Guy?
Toei Animation

Admiral Kizaru from ‘One Piece’ wields the power of the Glint-Glint Fruit which allows him to move and attack at the speed of light. His personality is agonizingly slow and laid-back despite his ability to travel instantaneously. He often speaks in a drawn-out drawl and seems confused even in the heat of battle. This casual demeanor masks a terrifying combatant who can shoot destructive laser beams from his fingertips. He embodies the concept of Unclear Justice by following orders without any personal passion or urgency.

Shunsui Kyoraku

Pierrot

The current Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 in ‘Bleach’ prefers sake and relaxation over the battlefield. Shunsui often wears a pink flowered kimono over his uniform to signal his casual attitude toward life. He attempts to talk his way out of fights and encourages his enemies to grab a drink with him instead. Beneath this frivolous exterior lies a master swordsman with a terrifyingly powerful Bankai. He only draws his dual blades when diplomacy fails and the safety of the Soul Society is at stake.

Glenn Radars

Liden Films

Glenn acts as a substitute instructor in ‘Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor’ and initially appears incompetent. He sleeps during class or forces students to study on their own while he reads comics. This behavior hides his past identity as a legendary assassin known as The Fool who specializes in nullifying magic. He possesses a unique ability that cancels all magical activation within a specific range. His teaching motivation only ignites when he sees his students in genuine danger.

Kuzan

Toei Animation

Formerly known as Admiral Aokiji in ‘One Piece’ this ice user follows a personal motto of Lazy Justice. Kuzan possesses the power of the Chilly-Chilly Fruit which allows him to freeze oceans and enemies instantly. He rides a bicycle across the sea and often naps while standing up or wearing a sleep mask. His relaxed demeanor persists even when he confronts some of the most dangerous pirates in the world. He eventually left the Marines because he could not find the motivation to serve under a ruthless leader.

Gintoki Sakata

Gintoki Sakata
Sunrise

The silver-haired samurai of ‘Gintama’ runs an odd-jobs business just to pay his rent and buy strawberry milk. Gintoki spends his days reading Jump magazine and picking his nose rather than practicing swordsmanship. He is a legendary war veteran known as the White Yaksha who struck fear into the hearts of alien invaders. His laziness is a coping mechanism for his traumatic past and the loss of his teacher. When his friends are threatened he reverts to his demon-like persona to crush his enemies.

King

A-1 Pictures

King is the Grizzly’s Sin of Sloth in ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ and spends much of his time floating on a pillow. He wields the Spirit Spear Chastiefol which changes forms to suit his combat needs without him moving a muscle. His magical power is immense enough to wipe out armies yet he prefers to avoid physical exertion entirely. He becomes physically weak without his weapon but his magical endurance is nearly limitless. His devastating attacks are often launched with a mere flick of his finger while he remains stationary.

Coyote Starrk

Pierrot

The Primera Espada of ‘Bleach’ is the strongest of Aizen’s army but has zero interest in fighting. Starrk split his soul into two beings just to escape the crushing loneliness caused by his immense spiritual pressure. He spends his time sleeping and actively asks his opponents to pretend they fought so he can go home. His speed and marksmanship are unrivaled even when he puts in minimum effort. He views battle as a tragedy rather than an opportunity for glory.

Satoru Gojo

Yes, They Named a Star after Gojo Satoru; Here’s Why!
MAPPA

Gojo is a teacher at Jujutsu High in ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and is widely recognized as the strongest sorcerer alive. He frequently arrives late to meetings and pushes his responsibilities onto his students or colleagues. His Limitless technique and Six Eyes allow him to dominate any opponent without breaking a sweat. He maintains a playful and disrespectful attitude even when facing ancient special grade curses. His ultimate goal is to foster a strong new generation so he does not have to handle everything alone.

Yami Sukehiro

Yami Sukehiro
Studio Pierrot

The captain of the Black Bulls in ‘Black Clover’ is a powerful magic knight who spends significant time occupying the toilet. Yami utilizes Dark Magic to absorb light and cut through dimensions with his katana. He prefers to sit back and gamble or threaten his squad members rather than do the paperwork required of a captain. He often throws his subordinates into dangerous situations to force them to surpass their limits. When he steps onto the battlefield his raw power and ki sensing make him a monster.

Sloth

Bones

Sloth from ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ is a homunculus who complains about the effort required to think or move. He possesses immense physical strength and is actually the fastest of the homunculi despite his name. His primary desire is to finish his assigned tasks quickly so he can return to sleep. He perceives every action including fighting for his life as a bothersome pain. His durability allows him to tank tank shells and alchemical attacks while barely reacting.

Hiko Seijuro

Liden Films

The master of Kenshin Himura in ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ lives a secluded life as a potter in the mountains. Hiko Seijuro XIII possesses strength and speed that far surpass the main protagonist of the series. He refuses to get involved in political conflicts and prefers drinking sake under the moonlight. His mastery of the Hiten Mitsurugi style allows him to defeat giants and armies effortlessly. He believes his power is too great to be used for any specific cause without causing chaos.
