True crime dramas have become one of streaming’s most reliable draws, but few upcoming releases carry quite the same weight of contradiction as Netflix’s newest offering, one that pairs an Academy Award winner with a story rooted in one of the most notorious criminal cases in American history. That tension between prestige talent and disturbing subject matter was on full display this week as the cast gathered for the film’s official send-off.

Annabelle Wallis walked the red carpet at the New York premiere of “Unabomber,” wearing a sleek black satin gown with a plunging neckline and a delicate beaded pendant necklace, ahead of the film’s September 25 release on Netflix. The event marked one of the final promotional stops before the drama arrives on the streamer, joining her co-stars in celebrating the project’s completion.

Directed by Janus Metz Pedersen and written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, “Unabomber” traces Ted Kaczynski’s transformation from a Harvard prodigy into one of the country’s most infamous domestic terrorists. Jacob Tremblay leads the cast as the younger version of Kaczynski, with the story unfolding across two timelines that examine both his formative years and the extensive FBI investigation that eventually led to his capture.

Wallis plays Christiana Morgan, an academic partner to Russell Crowe’s Professor Henry Murray at Harvard’s Psychological Clinic. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the film follows Kaczynski’s path from Harvard student and research subject to the Unabomber, framing his radicalization partly through controversial psychological experiments conducted by Murray that reshaped the young student’s mind during his time at the university.

Shailene Woodley rounds out the film’s central cast as FBI Agent Joanne Miller, the investigator whose pursuit of Kaczynski forms the second half of the story’s dual timeline. Additional cast members include Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca, giving the film a substantial ensemble built around both the psychological drama of Kaczynski’s early years and the procedural tension of the manhunt that followed.

The pairing of Crowe, an Academy Award-winning actor, with Tremblay, best known for his breakout performance in “Room,” signals Netflix’s clear intent to position “Unabomber” as a serious awards-season contender rather than a straightforward true-crime cash-in. Wallis, whose career has spanned everything from “The Tudors” to the “Annabelle” horror franchise, adds another recognizable name to a cast built around heavyweight dramatic performances.

Cinematography for the film comes from Yves Bélanger, with Marco Beltrami composing the score, further reinforcing the production’s prestige-drama ambitions. The project traces back to July 2020, when 2.0 Entertainment’s Doug Belgrad first hired Chalsen and Greaves to develop a feature film centered on the Unabomber case, with Tremblay’s casting announced in June 2025.

With the New York premiere now behind them, “Unabomber” is on track to arrive on Netflix September 25, giving audiences their first full look at how the film balances its dual narrative between Kaczynski’s psychological unraveling and the federal investigation that ultimately brought him down. Given the star power attached and the weight of the subject matter, the film appears positioned as one of the streamer’s more prestige-driven releases this fall.
