Anne Hathaway brought a touch of high-fashion nostalgia to the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday night, appearing on the red carpet in a look that felt like a direct tribute to her cinematic roots. The 43-year-old actress stunned onlookers in a black Valentino Haute Couture gown, which was intricately detailed with embroidered floral designs from top to bottom.

The ensemble featured a classic mermaid silhouette that was defined by a structured black belt at the waist, and she completed the look with a pair of dramatic, opera-length velvet gloves.

Many observers noted that the choice of florals seemed to be a playful nod to her famous 2006 film, specifically the moment when her on-screen editor mocked the idea of florals for spring as being anything but groundbreaking.

To complement the gown, Hathaway wore her hair in a sophisticated half-updo and showcased pieces from Bulgari’s newest high jewelry collection. Her diamond bib necklace was the center of attention, featuring a massive 8.02-carat yellow diamond as its focal point, bringing the total weight of the piece to over 35 carats.

Her appearance in Valentino carried additional emotional weight following the passing of the legendary designer Valentino Garavani this past January. Hathaway had maintained a close personal bond with the designer for nearly two decades, making her choice of his house for the ceremony a poignant tribute to their long friendship.

During the broadcast, the actress took the stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the awards for Costume Design, Makeup, and Hairstyling. She was joined by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, a pairing that delighted fans, given Wintour’s long-standing connection to the inspiration behind the Runway magazine world.

The appearance serves as a perfect prelude to the highly anticipated release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026. Hathaway is officially set to return as Andy Sachs, alongside Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestly and Emily Blunt as the ever-stressed Emily Charlton.

While the original trio is reuniting, the sequel will notably move forward without Adrian Grenier, who played Hathaway’s boyfriend in the first film. Grenier has suggested that the long-standing fan debate surrounding his character’s behavior led to his exclusion, telling reporters he believes the backlash to Nate was the primary reason he was not invited back for the follow-up.

Aside from the upcoming sequel, Hathaway has been enjoying a prolific period in her career, recently starring in the sci-fi thriller Flowervale Street directed by David Robert Mitchell.

She is also set to appear in the film Mother Mary later this year, a pop-star melodrama that will see her starring alongside Michaela Coel and featuring original music by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff.

This year’s Oscars marked Hathaway’s first time attending the ceremony in over ten years, with her last appearance dating back to 2014. Her return to the Academy Awards stage reminds audiences of her storied history with the event, including her 2013 win for Les Misérables and her memorable, if polarizing, hosting stint in 2011.

As she prepares for a busy summer of promotion for her new projects, Hathaway continues to be a dominant force in both the fashion and film industries. Her ability to blend her personal style with her iconic film roles ensures that she remains one of the most talked-about figures on every red carpet she walks.
