Anne Hathaway has stepped fully into the pop world with her new song “Burial,” released from her upcoming A24 thriller Mother Mary. The track, which Hathaway co-wrote with Charli XCX, George Daniel of The 1975, and Jack Antonoff, dropped on all streaming platforms on Thursday, March 5.

In the film, Hathaway plays a pop star at a crossroads, struggling with her career and personal demons. The synth-pop single features sweeping vocals and a repeated refrain: “This is your burial.” A24 also shared a 30-second teaser on YouTube titled Greatest Hits, showing Hathaway performing “Burial” on stage in character.

Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery of The Green Knight, also stars Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. Beyond “Burial,” Twigs, Antonoff, and Charli XCX collaborated on additional original music for the film.

According to the synopsis, “Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm on the eve of her comeback performance.”

Hathaway spoke about her role in Vogue’s August 2025 cover story, describing her character as “a sort of Gaga-Taylor Swift hybrid” who reconnects with a friend who helped shape her public persona during a career low point.

On the challenges of embodying a pop star, she said, “I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”

Mother Mary will open in limited theaters on April 17 and expand nationwide on April 24. Fans can expect an intense look at the highs and lows of fame, anchored by Hathaway’s performance and the film’s bold musical numbers.

Hathaway embracing the challenge of singing, performing, and acting at the same time is impressive. It’s rare to see an actor dive into music for a role so fully. I’m curious to see how audiences respond to her pop star transformation. What do you think about Anne Hathaway stepping into the music world for Mother Mary? Share your thoughts in the comments.
