Anne Hathaway’s Dinosaur Thriller ‘The End of Oak Street’ Is Coming to Streaming Sooner than You Think

If you missed The End of Oak Street in theaters, you will not have to wait much longer to see it at home. The Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor dinosaur thriller is making the jump to digital platforms just weeks after its theatrical release. Warner Bros. is bringing the movie to digital on September 15, giving viewers an easy way to check out the unusual sci-fi adventure without heading to a theater.

The movie takes a pretty wild idea and turns it into a family survival story. Instead of following a team of trained soldiers or scientists battling dinosaurs, The End of Oak Street puts an ordinary suburban neighborhood in an extraordinary situation. The residents suddenly find themselves transported into the prehistoric past, where huge creatures are now part of their everyday lives. They have to figure out how to survive while also dealing with the problems they already had with each other.

The film comes from writer and director David Robert Mitchell, best known for making the horror movie It Follows. Mitchell also worked with producer J.J. Abrams on the project, bringing together a team with plenty of experience in strange and ambitious genre stories. Rather than making the movie only about dinosaur attacks, the filmmakers wanted the human characters to matter just as much. That gives the film a different feel from a typical creature adventure and puts more attention on the family at the center of the chaos.

Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast, playing parents who suddenly have to protect their family in a world where almost everything wants to eat them. Maisy Stella, Christian Convery and Jordan Alexa Davis also star, completing the main family group. Their relationships become a major part of the story as they try to stay together while dealing with dinosaurs, fear and the pressure of being trapped somewhere completely unfamiliar.

The movie did not have an easy start at the box office. It opened to around $21 million domestically and finished its worldwide theatrical run with roughly $115 million. The production budget was reportedly somewhere between $80 million and $92 million, so the movie was not exactly a massive blockbuster. It also arrived during a busy stretch of the summer movie season, when audiences had plenty of other major films to choose from.

Still, The End of Oak Street managed to find an audience after its opening. Word-of-mouth helped the movie gain attention, and its audience score eventually reached 76 percent based on more than 2,500 reviews. A big part of the positive response focused on Hathaway and McGregor. Their chemistry gave the movie an emotional side that helped balance out the dinosaur action and the larger science-fiction story.

The technical side of the movie is another reason dinosaur fans may want to give it a look at home. Michael Giacchino provides the score, while Industrial Light & Magic worked on the visual effects. The dinosaur designs were created with more than just giant action scenes in mind. The filmmakers wanted the creatures to feel like part of the world and interact with the characters in ways that made the danger feel more personal.

For anyone who prefers physical media, there is a longer wait. The End of Oak Street will arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on November 3. Those releases will also include bonus material for fans who want to see how the movie was made. The extras include a behind-the-scenes look at Mitchell’s filmmaking process and a feature focused on how ILM created the dinosaurs.

September 15 is the date to remember for anyone who has been waiting to watch it from home. The theatrical run may be over, but this dinosaur adventure is just getting another chance to make some noise.
