Antonio Banderas and Daughter Stella Turn TIFF Into a Stylish Father-Daughter Date Night
Film festivals are usually about the movies, but Antonio Banderas and his daughter Stella at TIFF gave fans a sweet family moment to celebrate. The 66-year-old Oscar-nominated actor, known for films ranging from ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘Evita’ to ‘Shrek’ and ‘The Mask of Zorro’, brought along a very special guest this year.
The occasion was the world premiere of ‘Up Against It’, a new comedy-drama directed by Trudie Styler. The film marks Banderas’ return to movies after spending recent years heavily focused on theater and producing.
On September 17, Banderas stepped onto the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto alongside his only daughter, Stella. The appearance was a rare one, and many observers felt the father-daughter duo stole the spotlight.
Stella looked effortlessly chic in a fitted, long-sleeved black midi dress with an asymmetric neckline and draping along the bust and bodice. Banderas matched her perfectly in a black suit layered over a black button-down shirt covered in white stars, and both finished their looks with sunglasses.
As the pair posed in front of the festival backdrop, crowds of fans lined the barriers behind them. The timing made the moment even sweeter, with Stella turning 30 just days later on September 24. Stella is Banderas’ daughter with Melanie Griffith, to whom he was married from 1996 to 2015. Despite their split, the exes have remained very close.
Earlier this year, they were spotted having dinner with Stella and her husband, Alex Gruszynski. Banderas also shared a cozy couch photo with Griffith, Stella, and Alex in Los Angeles, describing his ex-wife as a lifelong friend. Banderas is also stepdad to Griffith’s children, including Dakota Johnson, 36, Alexander Bauer, 41, and stepson Jesse Johnson, 43. The blended family remains a warm part of his life.
While she’s comfortable on a red carpet, Stella isn’t too interested in following her father’s acting footsteps. Her only acting credit came as a child in ‘Crazy in Alabama’, Banderas’ directorial debut, in which she appeared opposite her mother.
Banderas has explained to HELLO! that his daughter isn’t really an actress at heart. She has instead pursued her own creative path, studying narrative studies, acting and directing, and even launching her own fragrance brand. Interestingly, Stella was named after Stella Adler, her mother’s acting teacher. In 2018, she began attending the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York.
Banderas has never been shy about expressing his pride in his daughter. He has marveled at how quickly time has passed, recalling how recently he brought Stella to a gala as a little girl.

He has also said he would make a wonderful grandfather and admitted the thought amazes him. Stella will soon mark her wedding anniversary with Alex in October. The pair’s bond extends far beyond red carpets. They even watched the same World Cup match together from different continents, with Stella in Los Angeles and Banderas in Málaga, Spain.
The ‘Up Against It’ premiere brought plenty of Hollywood attention to Toronto. Still, the image of a beaming Banderas with his grown-up daughter by his side became one of the festival’s most heartwarming snapshots. For a star with such a long and celebrated career, sharing the moment with family clearly meant a lot. It’s the kind of red carpet appearance fans hope to see more of.
