Streaming wars tend to be fought on subscriber numbers and box office splashes, but every September, the Emmys offer their own version of a scoreboard, one that carries real prestige within the industry itself. For years, that particular leaderboard has been dominated by the same two names at the top.

HBO Max and Netflix have spent the better part of the last decade trading places as the Emmys’ most decorated platforms, with last year’s ceremony seeing the two tie for the top spot with 30 wins apiece. This year, that long-standing hierarchy finally got shaken up in a genuinely historic way.

Apple TV finished the 2026 Emmys season with 28 total wins across both the Creative Arts ceremonies and the Monday night primetime broadcast, officially claiming the top spot among all networks and streamers for the first time since the platform launched back in 2019. HBO Max landed in second place with 21 wins, followed by Netflix in third with 16.

Roughly half of Apple’s total haul came from a single show. ‘Widow’s Bay’ accounted for 14 of the platform’s 28 wins on its own, officially breaking the record for the most Emmys ever won by a comedy series in a single season, a mark previously held by another Apple TV series, ‘The Studio,’ which had set the record just last year with 13 wins.

Apple’s other freshman hit, ‘Pluribus,’ contributed another six wins to the total, including Rhea Seehorn’s win for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Vince Gilligan’s long-awaited victory for Outstanding Writing. The remaining eight wins came from a mix of shows including ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles,’ ‘Palm Royale,’ ‘Slow Horses,’ and ‘Mr. Scorsese.’

HBO Max’s 21 wins leaned heavily on ‘DTF St. Louis,’ which claimed seven trophies including the top Limited Series prize, and ‘The Pitt,’ which picked up six wins across acting, directing, and series categories. Netflix, meanwhile, found its biggest success through individual performances, with Allison Janney winning for ‘The Diplomat’ and Sally Field taking home her fourth career Emmy for narrating ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures.’

Further down the platform rankings, Prime Video managed to crack double digits with 10 total wins, a figure that includes the five it shared with MGM+ for the recently canceled ‘Spider-Noir.’ NBC picked up eight wins thanks largely to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime special, while Peacock’s seven wins leaned heavily on ‘The Traitors,’ and CBS closed out ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s’ run with a solid six-win farewell season.

What makes Apple’s win especially notable is just how rarely this kind of shakeup happens at all. According to comicbasics.com’s analysis of the results, this marks only the second time in twenty years that a platform other than HBO Max or Netflix has topped the Emmys, following FX’s surprise win back in 2024, when that network claimed 36 total wins powered by ‘Shōgun’ and ‘The Bear.’

Apple TV’s rise has been building steadily over the past two ceremonies. Prior to 2025, the platform had topped out at just 10 Emmy wins in a single year, before more than doubling that total to 22 wins last year and now setting an all-time high with this year’s 28. With ‘Widow’s Bay’ already renewed for a second season and Apple’s broader slate showing genuine depth across comedy, drama, and limited series categories, this breakthrough looks less like a one-time fluke and more like the start of a genuine new era at the top of the Emmys leaderboard.
