Apple TV+’s Latest Historical Drama Rides Its Popularity Wave to a Season 3 Renewal
Apple TV+ has confirmed that its period drama The Buccaneers will return for a third season.
The news, first reported by Deadline, comes a couple of months after the show ended its second season with a shocking cliffhanger that left fans full of questions.
Based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel, the series follows a group of young American women who travel to London in the 1870s, eager for adventure and love in a society full of strict rules and social pressure.
The story centers on Nan St. George, played by Kristine Frøseth, who becomes caught between two men, her husband, Theo, the Duke of Tintagel, and his best friend, Guy, the man she truly loves.
Season 2 wrapped up with major twists. Theo gave up his title to marry someone else, while Nan ran away from her home carrying a secret that could change everything — she’s pregnant with Theo’s child, and he doesn’t know about it.
“Absolutely everything’s up for grabs, and none of the things that she thought were certain are certain anymore, except for the fact that [Nan]’s got [Theo]’s child in her stomach, and he doesn’t know about it,” showrunner Katherine Jakeways told Deadline after the Season 2 finale.
“Suddenly, she’s got freedom from being a Duchess, freedom from her marriage, and freedom from him knowing about this baby, giving her a carte blanche to make her own decision.”
In the upcoming season, viewers can expect new faces, including a potential villain — Theo’s secret half-brother, Kit, who was mentioned in the last episode of Season 2. The character is expected to take over Theo’s position as the new Duke of Tintagel.
The Buccaneers has become known for mixing classic period-drama style with a modern tone, even featuring Taylor Swift songs in its soundtrack.
Critics have responded positively, giving it a 72% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it hasn’t become one of Apple TV+’s biggest streaming hits, the show has gained a loyal audience who connect with its mix of romance, rebellion, and friendship.
Jakeways expressed her excitement about continuing the story, saying, “We couldn’t be more delighted to be lacing up our corsets, slipping on our ball gowns and running breathless across the cliffs of Tintagel for the third time to see what passionate adventures our beloved Buccaneers get up to next. Huge thanks to Apple TV+ and also to the devoted viewers for loving the show as much as we do.”
