Ariana Grande Champions Queer Twist on Glinda & Elphaba in ‘Wicked’ – Promises It’s Going to Be Discussed in Part Two!
‘Wicked’ was one of 2024’s most highly-awaited movies and one of the most successful movies in general. The movie debuted with $112.5 million in North America and $162.9 million worldwide, marking the largest opening for a Broadway musical adaptation ever. By January 1, 2025, it grossed a total of $648.5 million globally.
Despite its enormous success and good critical reception the conservative Christian group One Million Moms called for a boycott, claiming the film promotes witchcraft and supports the LGBTQ agenda, particularly for children.
Things got even worse when a portion of viewers realized that a lot of the cast members are queer.
Now Ariana Grande commented on the queer undertones of the movie. In a Variety interview, the actress expanded on her previous comments about Glinda’s potential queerness, emphasizing that while the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba is “platonic,” she believes the characters “are in love with each other.”
This reaffirms Grande’s belief in the queer undertones of their bond, aligning with her broader support for love in all its forms.
I think she’s a person who loves so much, and I do think that it goes beyond gender, and I think that’s a common theme in Oz. I also think that the ways in which she loves Elphaba so much, and that forgiveness and that unconditional love that they share — I think they’re in love with each other.
I know, yes, it’s platonic. But we’ll talk about it more in depth in movie two.
