Armie Hammer’s Banned Comeback Thriller Just Landed a Massive Global Deal
Armie Hammer has spent years trying to claw his way back into Hollywood’s good graces after his career collapsed in 2021. That implosion followed allegations of sexual misconduct that effectively ended his run as a leading man, with the actor largely vanishing from major studio projects in the years that followed. His attempted return has been anything but conventional, and it just took another unexpected turn.
The vehicle for that comeback is ‘Citizen Vigilante,’ a low budget action thriller from German filmmaker Uwe Boll. In the film, Hammer plays Sanders, a vigilante who takes justice into his own hands after losing faith in the legal system, marking his first leading role since his career fell apart. The project was originally announced under a different title before Warner Bros. sent a cease and desist over its use of “The Dark Knight,” forcing a rename.
Now ‘Citizen Vigilante’ has secured worldwide distribution through Quiver Distribution, the same company that already handled its North American release. Quiver, led by co-presidents Jeff Sackman and Berry Meyerowitz, has taken global rights excluding the United Kingdom, German-speaking territories, South Korea and Taiwan, expanding on the North American deal that brought the film to theaters on June 19.
The expanded deal didn’t happen in a vacuum. It arrived after Elon Musk personally intervened, posting the entire film on his X account so users could download it for free over a 48 hour window. That stunt came shortly after ‘Citizen Vigilante’ was effectively banned in Germany, where regulators denied it a rating over concerns its content could incite violence against immigrants.
Boll, who wrote, produced and directed the film, says the Musk endorsement wasn’t a direct conversation between the two of them. Speaking to Variety, Boll explained that Musk first reached out through the team behind his podcast, “Uwe Boll Raw,” before posting the movie himself, recalling being told “We got a message from Elon Musk.”
Financially, the film is still climbing out of a hole. Boll estimates ‘Citizen Vigilante’ has pulled in around $600,000 in revenue against a production budget of roughly $2 million, leaving plenty of ground to cover before turning a profit. Critics have not been kind, with Variety’s Todd Gilchrist calling the film “astonishingly bad” and accusing it of being a morally bankrupt piece of exploitation built around a xenophobic lead character.
Despite the brutal reviews, Boll is already eyeing a follow up. He’s floated sending Hammer’s character to England or America for a potential sequel, telling Variety, “When you make a successful movie, you always hope that you can make a second part.” No script exists yet, but Boll has said he’s confident Hammer would be on board to return.
Whether audiences actually want more of Sanders is another question entirely, especially with the film’s politics fueling so much of the conversation around it.
