Marvel Studios has a lineup of projects slated for release or development in the coming years. While progress on most of these projects is clear, one movie has been stuck in development limbo for quite some time, with only sporadic updates emerging. We’re referring to the War Machine movie, ‘Armor Wars.’

‘Armor Wars’ was initially envisioned as a film based on the comic storyline of the same name. It was intended to serve as a sequel to ‘Secret Invasion’ (released last year) and ‘Ironheart’ (whose release date is currently unknown). As far back as 2011, Don Cheadle confirmed the development of a War Machine film, with Joe Robert Cole brought on board to pen the script.

Nine years later, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was revealed that the ‘Armor Wars’ TV series is in the works for Disney+, with Don Cheadle reprising his role as James Rhodes. In 2021, Cheadle confirmed that production on the series would kick off in just a few months.

In August 2021, Yassir Lester was named the head writer for the series. However, in September 2022, Marvel Studios decided to turn the series into a feature film, keeping Cheadle and Lester on board. Filming was initially set to begin in early 2023 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, but the industry was halted by the historic SAG-AFTRA strike.

Now, Production Weekly has announced that ‘Armor Wars’ production will commence in 2025. This lines up with our previous report that the studio aimed to secure a director in Q1 of 2024 and start shooting in 2025.

Reportedly, Sam Rockwell has been in discussions with executives to return as Justin Hammer. Rockwell’s latest MCU involvement was in ‘What If…?’ Season 2, where he voiced the character of Justin Hammer.
