Arnold Schwarzenegger (78) Prepares To Bring Back His Legendary Characters on Screen
Action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger recently delighted fans at the Arnold Sports Festival by revealing he is in active discussions to revisit three of his most legendary film franchises.
The 78-year-old star announced that plans are moving forward for a new project titled King Conan, which would see him return to the role of the sword-wielding warrior he first brought to life in 1982.
To helm this new chapter, the studio has tapped filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the most recent Mission: Impossible entries. “They just hired a fantastic writer/director who did Tom Cruise’s last four movies,” Schwarzenegger explained to the crowd.
He added that the story is designed to be “age-appropriate” while still featuring the epic “madness, violence, magic, and creatures” expected of the genre. Beyond the fantasy realm, Schwarzenegger revealed he has been in talks with director Dan Trachtenberg regarding a possible return to the Predator franchise.
The actor, who famously starred in the original 1987 sci-fi classic, noted that the director “wants me to be in the next Predator,” marking a potential homecoming for his character, Dutch.
To cap off the exciting announcements, he also shared that he has received a script for a sequel to his 1985 hit, Commando. Schwarzenegger’s career has remained remarkably vibrant as he transitions into these legacy roles.
While he has focused more on television projects and philanthropic work in recent years, his recent filmography includes the 2023 action-comedy series FUBAR on Netflix. He also recently completed work on the Christmas action-comedy The Man With the Bag, which is slated for release later this year.
These potential projects represent a major resurgence for the action legend, who helped define the cinematic landscape of the 1980s and 90s. While official production timelines and contracts for King Conan, the Predator sequel, and Commando 2 have yet to be finalized, the actor’s public excitement has generated significant buzz across the industry.
Audiences are eager to see how these seasoned characters will be reinvented for a modern era of special effects and storytelling. The Conan franchise itself has a storied history, having launched in 1982 and receiving a follow-up with Conan the Destroyer in 1984.
Although a reboot starring Jason Momoa was released in 2011, this new installment aims to pick up the narrative thread of an older, kingly Conan that was briefly teased at the end of the original film. With a director of McQuarrie’s caliber now attached, the project promises a cinematic scale that matches the scale of the character’s long-standing legend.
