Asher Angel on the Scrapped ‘Shazam 3’ Film: “Yeah, I think we always planned on making a third one…”
Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released last year to mixed reviews and we all know that it was one of the final DCEU movies. The first Shazam! film was relatively successful and was a refreshing take on the DCEU at the time, but the sequel failed to deliver, and with all the issues related to Black Adam and Johnson’s refusal to connect the two movies, which was a natural thing to do, the Shazam! series was doomed to fail, at least as part of the original DCEU. We do know that a third Shazam! movie was planned, but the idea was ultimately scrapped when the DCEU went through a revamp.
Our good friends at ComicBookMovie.com had a talk with Asher Angel, the star of the Shazam! movies who played Billy Batson, the “human” version of the superhero; as we know, the superhero Shazam was portrayed by Zachary Levi, into whom Angel “transformer” when uttering the titular phrase!
Angel had an interesting talk with our colleagues, in which he revealed some interesting details about the Shazam! series, as well as some of his thoughts on movies in general, and superhero movies in particular. At first, he was asked to state his opinions on the so-called “superhero fatigue” and why he thought that the superhero movies of 2023 (both DC and Marvel) underperformed and this is what he had to say:
Look, I think the superhero genre is a really hard genre. I hate when people talk about superhero fatigue. I don’t believe in that stuff. I think whatever DC or Marvel puts out there, it’s gonna resonate, but if it resonates, it resonates. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I think a lot of the time, people put so much pressure on Marvel and DC in that every movie has to be amazing. It’s a hard genre, for sure, and I’m just happy I had the opportunity to be involved in that world. It was wish fulfilment because I always wanted to be a superhero when I was a kid.

The talk quickly shifted towards the Shazam! movies, and Angel was asked whether he would ever want to return to the franchise or, perhaps, take up Levi’s role at some point in the future. Here is his reply:
I’d always be open to going back and playing Billy Batson. I’d never want to take Zach’s place because we’re in this together. If there any other characters out there in the future, I’d also be open to that. I’m pretty open! There’s a time and there’s place, and it’ll happen.

Finally, the young actor was asked about the future of the series, and he revealed that there were indeed plans for a third movie, but that it is unlikely now, although he does not know if it is completely dead:
Yeah, I think we always planned on making a third one, but you have new people come in and take over and plans can change and things can shift. I guess we’ll see. We’ll see what the future holds.

And that was, more or less, the gist of the whole interview. Some interesting perspectives and information, for sure, but also some sad news for all Shazam! fans. We on Fiction Horizon are, of course, going to keep following the whole thing so if you want to know all the news and updates, be sure to keep following us!
