Asher Angel on the Scrapped ‘Shazam 3’ Film: “Yeah, I think we always planned on making a third one…”

Asher Angel, known for playing Billy Batson in the Shazam! films, recently shared his thoughts. He talked about his experience in the superhero world, the fate of the Shazam! series, and his views on the genre. The first Shazam! movie did well, bringing a fun twist to the DCEU. However, its sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, released in 2023, didn’t impress critics or fans. It was one of the last films in the original DCEU before the franchise got a major overhaul.
In the interview, Angel addressed the idea of “superhero fatigue,” a term some use to explain why 2023’s superhero movies from DC and Marvel struggled. He said, “Look, I think the superhero genre is a really hard genre. I hate when people talk about superhero fatigue. I don’t believe in that stuff. I think whatever DC or Marvel puts out there, it’s gonna resonate, but if it resonates, it resonates. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I think a lot of the time, people put so much pressure on Marvel and DC in that every movie has to be amazing. It’s a hard genre, for sure, and I’m just happy I had the opportunity to be involved in that world. It was wish fulfilment because I always wanted to be a superhero when I was a kid.” For him, being part of these films was a dream come true.
The conversation also turned to the Shazam! franchise itself. Angel played the human form of the hero, while Zachary Levi took on the role of Shazam, the powered-up version Billy transforms into.
When asked if he’d return as Billy or even step into Levi’s shoes, Angel responded, “I’d always be open to going back and playing Billy Batson. I’d never want to take Zach’s place because we’re in this together. If there any other characters out there in the future, I’d also be open to that. I’m pretty open! There’s a time and there’s place, and it’ll happen.” He made it clear he’s flexible but values his partnership with Levi.
On the topic of a third Shazam! movie, Angel confirmed there were plans at one point. However, those hopes faded with changes in the DCEU’s direction. He explained, “Yeah, I think we always planned on making a third one, but you have new people come in and take over and plans can change and things can shift. I guess we’ll see. We’ll see what the future holds.”
While the idea isn’t fully dead, it seems unlikely now. The sequel’s poor performance, combined with issues like Dwayne Johnson’s refusal to link Black Adam with Shazam!, hurt the series’ chances in the old DCEU setup.
Angel’s comments show his passion for superhero films and his openness to future roles. Still, the shift in DC’s plans leaves the Shazam! story uncertain for now. Fans will have to wait and see if anything changes down the line.
