‘Attack on Titan’ Creator Hajime Isayama Unveils Special ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Illustration for Star Wars Fans

Hajime Isayama, the creator of Attack on Titan, has taken part in a special collaboration with the Star Wars franchise by drawing an official illustration for the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu. The artwork was released ahead of the movie’s worldwide launch on May 22.

The illustration features the Mandalorian in a battle-ready stance while protecting Grogu. Alongside the artwork, a handwritten message from Isayama was shared. Other well-known manga creators also contributed comments for the release, including George Morikawa, Oh! great, Ken Wakui, and Atsushi Ohkubo.

The upcoming film continues the story of the popular Star Wars universe. It follows the Mandalorian, a bounty hunter, and Grogu, a young character with powerful Force abilities, as their journey continues on the big screen.

Isayama also shared his personal thoughts about the franchise and his connection to it. He said, “My first encounter with Star Wars was when I was shown Episodes 6 → 5 → 4 during a homestay in Idaho. The biological feel of mold and dust drifting inside inorganic spaceships—that contrast was what gave me a sense of real life within Star Wars. Above all, Grogu is just too cute, I can’t get enough of him.”

Other manga creators also reflected on the impact of Star Wars in their own work.

George Morikawa shared how the films influenced his creative journey, saying he still finds inspiration from watching them in theaters and feels a personal connection to the galaxy far away.

Oh! great focused on the visual design and technology in the series. He said the machines, ships, and characters left a strong impression on him growing up and still influence his work today. He also expressed excitement for new viewers experiencing Star Wars for the first time through this new film.

Ken Wakui spoke about the emotional side of the series and the strong relationships between characters. He highlighted how excited he is for the new story featuring the Mandalorian and Grogu.

Atsushi Ohkubo focused on the visual style of Star Wars, especially lightsabers. He mentioned his love for different colors of lightsabers and said he is looking forward to seeing Grogu continue his journey, even imagining the character using a lightsaber in the future.

Hajime Isayama is best known for creating Attack on Titan, which ran from 2009 to 2021 and became one of the most popular manga and anime series worldwide. The anime adaptation aired over several seasons, ending with a final set of special episodes that concluded the story.

The final chapter of the series was later turned into a movie version with updated visuals and sound. It performed strongly at the box office in Japan and was later released internationally, including on streaming platforms.
